The outcomes of battles to capture and retain customers for communications and electronic entertainment services will depend at least as much on the decisions and actions under their own control that are taken by individual players, whether a telco or a cable operator, as on sources of respective generic strengths and weaknesses identified and often presented as inevitable by analysts. Telcos' push into video should stimulate cable operators to take stronger initiatives in mobile wireless, despite previous failed attempts, and learn to exploit the rise of online video.
