Due to the increasing costs or health care in the U.S and the perception that health care is cheaper in other countries, even with the travel and housing expenses, patients are succumbing to the foreign markets.India, Indonesia and other countries, with lower costs of labor and less expenses overall are getting into the market of delivering surgical services such as cardiac and cosmetic surgery at bargain prices.The question is this really a bargain and what are the real issues?

Article provides a spa in Ghana as an example of a boom in health tourism to that country. Medical tourism is popular already but many of those seeking care come from countries with less well developed services and tend to visit Western hospitals, rather than the reverse. There remains a need for basic health care services in Ghana (and elsewhere) but this does not seem to cater for any but the affluent.

Just as high tech products are manufactured in Asian countries for a fraction of the cost, medical procedures will be provided in less developed countries for a fraction of the cost in the not so distant future.It will initially be low tech procedures such as cosmetic operations and minor procedures and will go on to more complex procedures like orthopedic and cardiac surgeries.
