I agree with Paul's analysis and associated conclusions. I would also add that when Google reaches the level of reliability attained by other SaaS like suppliers (SalesForce.com, etc.) then their gmail offering will become acceptable to the enterprise businesses.

Google’s free consumer Gmail has gained a large and loyal following. Google would like to leverage that to dethrone Microsoft Exchange in enterprises. While Microsoft should be careful not to underestimate the threat, Google faces formidable challenges, not least of which is security.
Don't confuse e-mail with apps

It's perfectly possible that Google will be very successful in attracting corporate clients of all sizes to its e-mail offerings. There are good reasons why an e-mail service "in the cloud" should provide advantages to customers. However, it's a bizarre leap of the imagination to suppose that this will extend to basic office applications such as word processing and spreadsheets: there are major technical inhibitors to deploying these applications on the far end of an Internet link. To succeed in this area, Google must learn two things: managing complexity of multi-featured products, and understanding off-line caches of on-line products.
Roll the dice on Google or Microsoft....?

No one can predict the future, but at least there is a market pitch for challenger Google. Understimation of this big player can put Microsoft on a stand still or even worse.
