Mobile Internet devices (MIDs) could be the wave of the future. The MID market is clearly up against challenges, especially for those devices that focus on basic computing rather than a specific app. Chipset and mobile broadband providers are rallying behind the opportunity, but it may take some convincing for the rest of the market to find the value in the middle.

Intel inside everything?

The partnership between Intel and TSMC will allow expanding Intel platform well beyond PC, notebooks and Net Books. Access to IP, will allow a set of customers who value customization consider Intel platform. In addition to access to IP and ASIC design capability, TSMC can offer Intel a lower cost manufacturing facility to compete more effectively.

The Battle for MIDs

Intel's announcement of partnership with TSMC on some Atom cores is an an important deveopment in its battle for mobile Internet devices (MIDs) market. While the announcement sounds like this will put Intel in competition with ARM, and that is correct, but a bigger battle is with QualComm to capture the market for MIDs.
