 Motorola made the best cell phones at the beginning of the new era of mobile communications Their unwarranted fix on their own closed, limited, difficult to use operating system became the epitaph of their cell-phone lead. It may be too late for Motorola. Picking the Android OS may not be the way to go either: pairing a smart phone manufacturer wannabe with an OS wannabe.  It they want to get back into the game they need to swallow their pride and support Windows Mobile and PalmOS

Motorola's recent announcement of a profit in Q2 2009 was due to the notorious phenomenon of "one time" factors, which by definition are not a basis for long term improvement. The performance of all its units in terms of revenues was grim, even given current broad economic hardships. It is hard to detect any signs of or reasons for significant improvement in the company's position in the near or medium term.
