"Imminent Tie-Up" or potential disaster in the making?

May 4, 2009

This may be a marriage of necessity rather than synergy should these two come together.  They have different customer bases, different techologies, and different business approaches.

Despite Difficulties T-Mobile/Sprint Merger May Be Worth It to Deutsche Telekom

While Sprint's financial weakness may not be as bad as any other US carrier, Deutsch Telekom, T-Mobile's parent, is under intense financial pressure that may be leading them to focus more on the US market.  The best strategy for Deutsche Telekom to grow T-Mobile may be to merge; a strategy that certainly worked for Verizon taking over Alltel.  While the technical problems facing integration of the two carrier's networks may be the biggest hurdle to this merger, it offers T-Mobile an opportunity to offer new services and attract new customers and expand Deutsche Telekom into an ever important US market.

T-Mobile And Sprint: Hardly The Best Move for T-Mobile And A Hazardous One

April 30, 2009

In 2008 there was serious consideration of an SKTelecom/Sprint tieup, while Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile's parent, has been involved in relationships with (remember GlobalOne) and rumors concerning Sprint for a long time. A T-Mobile/Sprint merger would represent the triumph of hope over experience, and a boon for investment bankers. T-Mobile USA has other more promising paths to pursue to strengthen its competitive position.

Hard to See Attraction of T-Mobile, Sprint Combination

April 30, 2009

1.  Even the “global economic recession” does not seem to be a good enough reason for Sprint-Nextel and T-Mobile USA to come together. 2.  They would only immensely increase their “struggles” in doing so. 3.  Surely and superficially, “[a] merger may become an inevitable next step” – but possibly only on paper.

Unlikely Scenario

April 30, 2009

Given the challenging situation that Sprint is facing and continued loss of subscribers and technology mismatch between Nextel iDEN and Sprint CDMA, it is very unlikely that T-Mobile will make a move to acquire Sprint.  Regulatory environment does not provide an environment for a foreign owned carrier to acquire Sprint.
