The GM Volt will be a winner IF it is price competitive and has reasonable performance and economy. Despite the so called "quality" issue that saddles GM previous well thought out and executed GM vehicles have sold well.
The Volt - GM's Attempt at Green Marketing without the Green Product or the Green Return
April 18, 2008
The GM Volt will contain a battery pack technology that is largely unproven and largely untested to withstand automotive environmental and reliability requirements. In addition, the manufacturing of Lithium Ion battery packs on the scale that will be needed for Volt production is an environmentally unfriendly process that will offset much of the benefit of the Volt's "Green Friendly" marketability if Green saavvy consumers investigate the manufacturing process for this technology. The true cost of the Lithium Ion battery pack design, development, and piece price will have to be subsidized by GM, resulting in less "green" to the bottom line than any automotive company would like to see. GM's true hope is that "Green Hype" will lead to green dollars in the showroom.
Can the Genral Motors Volt meet the expectations?
April 17, 2008
General Motors has been exploring and developing alternative drivetrains for many years. These designs have not yet reached the stage of commercial viability for a variety of reasons. However recent events such as increased fuel prices, tougher fuel economy regulations, increased public concerns for the environment, concerns with dependence on foreign oil dependence have raised the level of these efforts. The introduction of the Volt concept car with its projected battery powered range, and backup gasoline engine "range extender" has fired up public enthusiasm. This could be a break through vehicle for GM if they can pull it off. It really depends on the viability of the lithium-ion battery pack.
GM Will Deliver Because They Can
April 17, 2008
GM's Volt will create demand for another generation of hybrid vehicles. GM does possess the resources and skills to bring this vehicle to market. Doing in "on schedule" may not matter if others have not made progress in the all electric arena.
GM cuts gasoline consumption by?
April 16, 2008
GM takes a leading role in reducing dependence on crude oil. After the EV1 was undeservedly shot down, GM is back again and even better. I feel any new technology, that will reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign oil, is a win-win for the manufacturer and the consumer!
