Are All The New Internet CEO Changes A Sign Of VCs Getting Impatient?

Are All The New Internet CEO Changes A Sign Of VCs Getting Impatient? | blog.streamingmedia.com

In the past three quarters, at least 27 vendors in the industry have had changes at the CEO level. While there are always changes in executive management, I don't recall there being that many new CEOs in such a short period of time in our industry. It begs the question, are VCs getting impatient and demanding a quicker return on their investment? Or are they starting to really see the opportunity and bringing in those who have experience in growing companies larger and faster?

Pricing Pressure On Akamai and Limelight Overblown By Analysts

Pricing Pressure On Akamai and Limelight Overblown By Analysts | blog.streamingmedia.com

Everywhere I turn, all I keep reading about is the "pricing wars" taking place in the CDN market and how much it is affecting Akamai and Limelight. Yet to date, I have not seen a single article in the media or from an analyst that actually mentions any real numbers or examples when it comes to the pressure in the market. Many keep saying Akamai and Limelight are feeling pressure, but then give no details on what percentage of their contracts, customers, business or products they think it is affecting. Most of them, don't even know what the services cost. Way too many analysts are speculating without any real data on the true impact of the pricing decline in the market.

Akamai Shows P2P Solution To Select Customers | blog.streamingmedia.com

While no official announcement was put out by Akamai recently about their P2P offering, in late November in Munich Germany, Akamai showcased some of it's P2P offering for a very small select group of clients and partners. Based on what some of those customers have told me, Akamai stated that P2P traffic will be priced lower than CDN traffic, but Akamai did not give out any pricing details.

NBC Direct To Use P2P Video Delivery From Pando Networks | blog.streamingmedia.com

In September, NBC announced that come this fall they would launch a new service, named NBC Direct, that would enable viewers to watch some of NBC's top TV shows as ad-supported downloads. While NBC plans to use many platforms to make their content available including iTunes, the move by NBC is essentially driven by the desire to cut out the middle man and deal directly with the viewer.

VeriSign Expected To Sell Their CDN Business | blog.streamingmedia.com

A few weeks ago, VeriSign held they annual analyst day where they unveiled new details about the company's strategic direction for 2008. Their newly announced strategy is to sell a number of businesses in the company's portfolio, such as communications, billing and commerce and focus instead on their core business and a smaller group of products and services.

Adobe's New Flash Server Pricing Improves CDNs P&L, Lowers License Fee For Customers

Adobe's New Flash Server Pricing Improves CDNs P&L, Lowers License Fee For Customers | blog.streamingmedia.com

While Adobe has gotten a lot of traction in the market with their Flash video platform, many content companies have not adopted Flash streaming due to the server license costs or the license fee that CDNs are required to charge for Flash streaming. With today's announcement by Adobe of Flash Media Server 3 and the new Flash Media Interactive Server, those licensing costs have now been drastically reduced.

Adobe Launches New Websites Showcasing HD Video Content

Adobe Launches New Websites Showcasing HD Video Content | blog.streamingmedia.com

Last week, Adobe quietly launched two new HD websites that showcases content in HD quality using the Flash platform. The launch of the sites also coincided with the launch of a new product section at the top of the main Adobe.com website. Different images and products are highlighted each time you load the page and one of them promotes "The fusion of TV and the Internet" and links to a site I had not seen until now at adobe.com/flashon. The flashon site contains movie trailers from some of the major studios as well as some other content. It's been a busy week for Adobe and they have really increased the volume of HD quality content for demonstration on their websites.

Content Delivery Pricing: Understanding CDN Overages

Content Delivery Pricing: Understanding CDN Overages | blog.streamingmedia.com

I’ve seen numerous reports lately by some in the financial community talking to “bursting” overages by CDN providers. Many of these references talk to overages incorrectly and some analysts might benefit from better understanding the two different ways CDNs charge for their services and exactly how “bursting” fees play into a CDNs bottom line.

CDN Pricing Data: Average Cost Per GB Declines In Q4 Due To Startups | blog.streamingmedia.com

With all the talk in the market about the"pricing wars" taking place in the CDN industry, each quarter I review what the average going rate is and how it compares to pricing in the previous quarter. (Q3 pricing details here) The pricing data below is from my presentation last week at the Streaming Media West show entitled "CDN Pricing: Costs for Outsourced Video Delivery". The on-demand video of the presentation will be available shortly.

How Is CDNs Network Performance For Streaming Measured?

August 17, 2007

A new contender in Web content delivery | www.latimes.com

No matter how big or small a content delivery network is, they all talk about the performance of their network. Small regional service providers, global CDNs, P2P providers etc... all market the value in everything they do regarding how good their network performs. The problem is, the more customers I ask, the more of them say they don't know how to compare one network to another for video streaming - and neither do I.

MSNBC.com Needs To Dump MSN's Lousy Video Platform

August 2, 2007

Msnbc.com Launches Online Advertising Network | money.cnn.com

I first wrote about this back in March and I am amazed that even since then, MSNBC.com still can't get it's live video streaming to work for anyone with a Firefox or Safari browser. And the worst part, they have no problem delivering you a 15 second ad in the player first, BEFORE they tell you that your browser does not currently support live video. So I have to sit through a video ad only to then be told that I can't see the live stream I clicked on.

Google And I Agree On One Thing: TV Is Not Dead

August 2, 2007

TV Is Not Dead Yet | www.imediaconnection.com

It's good to see that I am not the only one who thinks people are crazy when they say that TV is dead. TV is not dead. People kept telling me they don't watch TV anymore and only use their computer for video. What are they watching?

Internap Is Not The Next Akamai

July 31, 2007

Internap May Be the Next Akamai | internet.seekingalpha.com

In an article on Barron's website this week, which Seeking Alpha has an annotated article summary of by Judy Weil, Mark Vererka says that Internap may be the next Akamai. No offense to Internap, but that's an absurd statement for anyone to make. As you'll see below when it comes purely to revenue, numbers don't lie.

BBC's Internet TV Service Provides Little In The Way Of A TV Experience

July 31, 2007

Welcome to BBC iPlayer Beta | www.bbc.co.uk

The BBC announced today their new free Internet TV service today and are heralding the arrival of their "on-demand" iPlayer as "important as the first color broadcasts in the 1960s." They have got to be kidding.
