Japan Not Necessarily Employee-Friendly
October 16, 2008
If you must get sacked, try to do it in Japan | us.ft.com
1. Article propagates the myth that employees are better protected in Japan than in other industrialized countries. 2. Article fails to point out that, at least for readers of The Financial Times, litigating a wrongful dismissal suit in Japan can be a financial disaster. 3. Employee-friendly workplaces are far fewer in Japan than they were 20 years ago. The economy argues against such workplaces, and public opinion, while strongly in favor of fair treatment of employees, does not translate into legislation or actual practice.

Taxes Force Americans To Pay Many Ways | furchtgott-roth.com
A high rate of filing of tax returns-- ( 1.) Reduces pressure on the US government to simplify its byzantine tax system, which is at times incomprehensible to both tax collectors and tax advisors, because the tax returns and revenues continue to flow; and ( 2.) Reduces pressure on the US government to finance itself through means other than income taxes, such as customs duties (the nation's basic source of revenue in 1776), filing fees (which fail to cover costs for most federal procedures) and a national sales tax.
eBay's Tie-Up with Yahoo Japan Just Ties Up eBay
December 11, 2007
Update: eBay, Yahoo Japan to tie up in auctions | www.infoworld.com
Japan's online auction market reportedly nears US$ 4 billion annually. eBay has a better system for dealing with the failures that are Yahoo Japan's weak underbelly: nonpayment, fake items, shifty sellers and shill bids. Until eBay also brings PayPal to Japan, and alters its feedback and dispute-resolution policies to deal with overseas shipments to First World countries like Japan, eBay will not get major sales revenue from this move.
China's Rare Earth Minerals Support Common Japanese High Technologies

Japan Relations under strain as China puts squeeze on metals | www.busrep.co.za
1. China's economic growth, through its demand for minerals, can pinch competitors at the high end of technology as well as the level of assembly and manufacture that relies on cheap labor. 2. Japan seeks to maintain competitiveness in flat panel displays and precision fabrication by ensuring adequate access to rare metals and minerals in the short term and by developing substitute materials in the long term.
What Happens When "Just In Time" Doesn't Arrive?

Toyota, Others, to Temporarily Halt Production in Japan After Quake | online.wsj.com
A number of Japanese manufacturing companies that are relatively unknown outside of industry circles in Japan have come to dominate worldwide production of key components and materials that feed larger industries. When these "last man standing" suppliers are themselves knocked down by disasters, there may be no alternative sources of supply, and certainly none in Japan capable of feeding into "just in time" supply chain management. This can cause major export industries to suffer production disruptions. As the old adage states, "for want of a nail, the horseshoe was lost; for want of a horseshoe, the horse was lost; for want of a horse, the rider was lost; for want of a rider, the battle was lost." For want of a piston ring, Toyota's daily production was lost for a short period.

Defeat for Japan's Ruling Party | www.forbes.com
Loss of an Upper House majority by Japan's Liberal Democratic Party may delay some key fiscal and deregulatory measures. This may be good or bad for the Japanese economy. By some estimates, an inability to legislate a massive rise in consumption tax championed by the LDP may avoid a predicted decline in GDP. However, with control of both legislative houses divided, bold deregulation, market access and privatization measures are also likely to be delayed.
