Plastic bag taxes remain a big issue internationally.  Now moves in Australia (where there is already an anecdotal take-up of woven bags) have placed the regulatory burden on retailers at the fore.  There is a political attraction in not imposing a tax, as is seen in the Australian Environment Minister's denials in this article.  However, anything less simple than pricing usage directly to the consumer may add a regulatory burden to the retail sector.

The Australian Tax Office is looking at deals through tax havens. They have some good leads.  It is not simply about Liechtenstein.  Their information is wider and deeper than that. Whether a transaction looks legitimate or not, if it was run through a low-tax jurisdiction it needs to be reviewed.

An aggressive tax risk positioning is more likely to attract attention.   Now the ATO's message is directed to the CFO.  CFO's should be conscious of how the company is positioned in the eyes of the Tax Office. 

The critical question is how much more information to communicate to Directors.
