Wyeth Submits European Marketing Authorization Application for its 13-Valent Vaccine for the Prevention of Pneumococcal Disease in Infants and Young Children | phx.corporate-ir.net

With the introduction of Prevnar, there has been a dramatic decline in invasive pneumococcaal disease in young children that has had a herd immunity effect on all ages.  There has been a bit of a compensatory increase in serotype 19A disease (not in the current formulation of Prevnar).  This new vaccine will add another six serotypes of protection, including 19A that will give us another weapon against the villain microbes.

In our pediatric/adolescent medicine practice, this new vaccine has been extremely well-accepted by parents and teens.  There has been very little push-back or concern expressed about using a vaccine to treat an STI.  Most parents are eager to have their daughter immunized and protected against these four HPV serotypes.

The efficacy data looks significantly better. Nothing is mentioned about whether administration will be easier than the once a month IM injection Synagis requires. This looks like an evolutionary improvement rather than a revolutionary one.

It is reasonable to generalize this study to a broader population. There are problems with prescribing inappropriately, patients using inappropriately, and DME companies inappropriately pushing nebulizers.

Pay for performance is a great concept. Many practices are unable to provide the data to make it work. Most of the measures chosen are simple, least-common-denominator type efforts and may only have marginal applicability to overall quality of care.
