Apple purchased PlaceBase and PushPin to do what may be obvious.  For users of Apple's recent release of Snow Leopard and for customers contemplating deployment of Apple's X-serve OS/Servers, communications remains a key component of any enterprise.  Apple may be building cloud enforced applications for better communications.

AT&T takes the phone out of iPhone | news.cnet.com

AT&T complains that they are not making money subsidizing the iPhone.  In April, 2008 AT&T made the claim that the Internet was running out of bandwidth and would do so by 2010.  The freedom to roam is really not so free since our national wireless infrastructure is a hodgepodge and unlike "number portability" there is inadequate portability of customer purchased hardware between carriers.  It all boils down to priorities and yes, it is political.
