The spread of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, schistosomiasis, and tuberculosis is a cause of global concern. Pharmaceutical companies continue to develop and market drugs that treat them effectively. However, the drugs are often unaffordable (1) (references attached) to the very large patient populations of the developing world. Governments in these countries do not have the funding to educate and distribute the necessary medicines to cure and control their spread. How can the drugs for infectious diseases be made affordable without subsidies?

For success in the new model, companies will have to rely on improved manufacturing technologies and quality by design (QbD) will become way of life and a new era.

Teva’s purchase of Cephalon is its effort to become the biggest independent threat in the pharmaceutical world to the big pharmaceuticals.  It is a valiant effort. In recent years its acquisitions of Barr, Ratiopharm and now Cephalon along with the distribution relationship with P&G are steps in the right direction. For increased customer base drug prices have to come down. It can only happen through consolidation and change. Teva can show how the costs can be lowered and the profits improved.
