Cooper Vision needs Avaira to be successful to maintain it's status in the Contact Lens Industry

CooperVision Introduces Avaira™ Two-Week Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses | www.coopervision.com
Silicone Hydrgol lenses are the latest technology in the contact lens industry. Nearly 100% of of my new fits are silicone hydrogel lenses, and the 2 week modality is the most popular wearing schedule. Currenly J&J has the lion's share of the market with their Acuvue Advance and Oasys contact lenses (both of which are 2 week lenses). Ciba's O2 Optix lenses have some issues with ridigty, initial corneal discomfort and lid allgeries. Cooper needs to be successful with it's Avaira lens to keep pace with the Contact lens market. If it is all that Coopers says it is- a low modulus lens with good wettability, initial comfort, moist, and doesn't attract deposits- it will create a fantastic alternative to J&J 's lenses. This is especially true because Cooper historically offers better pricing than J&J. I look forward to the day when I reach for a Cooper lense as my first lens of choice- a healthy, good lens at a good price.
AMO Solution Is Not Contaminated- But it is not killing off Amoeba's

CDC warns about contact lens solution | news.yahoo.com
This is not the same as the Fusarium fungal outbreak seen last year in B&L Renu with Mositureloc product. This outbreak is with an Amoeba which is commonly found in water. The issue with Complete is that it does not successfully disinfect and kill off this Ameoba after a patients contact lenses have been exposed to it from another external (likely water) source. I will be advising my patients to NOT expose their contact lenses to any tap water, and that daily wear disposeables are the only contact lenses I would ever allow them to swim in.

Fish and Vitamin D Linked to Lower Risk of Macular Degeneration | www.medpagetoday.com
This article is important in that although we presently have ocular vitamins implicated in the the retardation of AMD they do not currently include omega 3 fatty acids or Vitamin D. At this point the only treatments available for dry AMD is based on the first ARED study- which implicated Lutein and Zinc as macular protectors. As the population ages, AMD is becoming a crisis of epidemic proportions, and if something as easy as eating fatty fish ,and drinking milk can retard the process, I absolutely would recommend it to my patients!!
Contact lens solution options are shrinking.

Another Contact-Lens Solution Recalled | www.newsinferno.com
While the recall of Complete is limited, it will undoubtly cause most practioners to tell their patients to discontinue all of AMO's Complete product use.
As with the Renu recall, patients will change to different products and will likely not return, unless major product changes are made--in both labeling and packaging of their products.
These two recalls, in such a relatively short period of time, will lead practioners with very few choices. There are now really just 2- Optifree-Replenish, and the few hydrogen perioxide syytems that are currenly available.
