Think first about doing a THA procedure in patients with severe hip, low back pain | www.orthosupersite.com

The differential diagnosis of hip and spine has plagued orthopaedic surgeons for some time. Patients often present with both as not only can the pain be linked mechanically there are obvious neurologic reasons for someone with back problems to have referred pain to the hip. Hip arthroplasties have occurred in patients where the primary pathology was spinal to find upon awakening that the pain has not improved and vice versa. The gaint abnormalities that can come about with hip arthritis can exacerbate any pre-existing lumbar pathology therefore not surprising at the improvement noted in the article.

We will see an increase as the baby boomers move solidly into clinically significant osteoporosis...

Hip fracture also will increase for the same reason....although they do not have a high complication rate if the correct surgery is chosen to meet the pathology...overall 20% non-union for femoral neck fractures (more than likely surgeries that should have been hemiparthroplasties). 25% of patients die in first year after hip fracture

If we can truly impact above then there is a case for the product...if not...nice book end...

Non-union...can be tough to heal long bone non-unions..anything to help is helpful...other products available in this space...have to demonstrate significant clinical superiority...ease of use....
