Why should I prescribe this drug?

FDA Approves XYZAL(R) (Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride) Tablets For The Relief Of Seasonal And Year Round Allergies, And Chronic Hives | www.medicalnewstoday.com

Xyzal, or levocetirizine is a racemic version of Zyrtec, or cetirizine, which is an effective antihistamine for the treatment of allergic rhinitis and urticaria.  The problem is that the generic form of Claritin, or loratadine, is just as effective and costs much less (without the hassle of trying to get an insurance company to pay for it!). In order to convince me to write prescriptions for this medication I would have to see a clear, unequivocal benefit in a randomized, controlled trial.  That benefit would have to be against loratadine and not just against a placebo. I would also need to see evidence that the drug will not pose any danger to my patients, since the current competitors are known to be relatively safe.
