Turkey, Israel Close To Finalizing Drone Deal | www.defensenews.com

Turkey has been a member of NATO for decades. They are an ally of the USA in a tough neighborhood. I have consulted with the chemical industry in Turkey for four years. They are as variable in their religious practices as many Christians are in the West. The country is strongly secular in the Western portion and strongly religious in the Eastern region. They have a strong defense industry that can make good use of UAV's from Israel.

Zoltek announces New Wind Energy Development Alliance | www.reuters.com

The recent announcement (Sept. 9, 2009; of an alliance between Zoltek and GBT (Netherlands) appears at first glance to be a step down the value chain. In fact it offers little. All the major wind power generator companies design their own blades and regard it as a core technology.  LM Glasfiber ($1.3B) already designs and makes blades for the many wind power companies. So who will buy the designs or blades from GBT? How much impact will this alliance have on Zoltek sales? Answer, not much.

ATK enters agreement with Hexcel, USEC | www.compositesworld.com

Yesterday USEC announced a three way partnership with ATK and Hexcel to build composite high strength gas centrifuge tubes for the enrichment of uranium. Hexcel announced that the deal will mean sales of as much as $100 million beginning in 2008 and peaking in 2010 - 2011 period. The carbon fiber to be used was not announced. Based on the application it will likely be a high tensile strength fiber similar to that already used in rocket motor cases. These fibers sell for roughly $50 per pound. this means that Hexcel will have to add capacity for 2 million pounds. Hexcel is now adding 1.5 million pounds in the USA and in Spain. The current expansions are destined for aerospace programs in the USA and EU. This application is highly performance driven and has a high demand for reliability. This means that Hexcel has had to undergo extensive qualification testing before selection. It also means that they will be difficult to displace by other suppliers.
