Going with AT&T was the right technology choice for Apple

July 11, 2007

Was Verizon Really Wrong To Pass On The iPhone? | telecom.seekingalpha.com

I would like to offer a different perspective on this article.  That is Apple going with AT&T was the right technology choice for Apple to address the global market and potential for iPhone.  AT&T uses GSM radio technology which as been embraced by the overwhelming majority of global mobile wireless carriers.  Verizon uses CDMA technology which is used predominantly in the United States for Verizon and Sprint, and in Korea.  By launching iPhone using GSM technology it will be far easier and faster for Apple to reach similar agreements with international carriers in Europe and Asia, leading to faster iPhone penetration and larger, accelerated Apple profits.  It also positions Apple to be able challenge the high end phone offerings of Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Research in Motion on a global basis.
