Indian software export industry has entered a stage in growth where it is increasingly characterized by high competitive pricing/cost pressures combined with higher wages/taxes at home and low profitability via end clients. The example of Infosys is not unique nor is it temporary!! Cyber terrorism a strong growth industry or a nuisance? - sequel

December 18, 2009

Twitter hacked by Iranian Cyber Army | www.cnn.com

Daily there are reports of social media ( Twitter ,Facebook) and other commercial sites/devices (RIIM's Blackberrys) being hacked or suffering outages due to malware/hackers causing breaches of security. In addition, defence sites/technology are being targeted with increasing frequency and damage -see:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8419147.stmWill we ever take these threats seriously enough before they cause heavy and irrevocable damage to the best of our concerns - private and public?!!

Google's attitudes to privacy cause adverse competitor reactions

December 15, 2009

Mozilla man urges move to Bing from Google | tech.uk.msn.com

Irritations caused by recent comments by Eric Schmidt from Google have caused sharp adverse reactions from competitors ( such as Mozilla's Dotzler ) who claim Google does not take privacy issues/criticisms from users seriously.Dotzler has urged users to move from Google to Microsoft Inc.'s Bing, a reaction I predicted in one of my recent analysis titled 'Google's privacy strategy - a sequel' dated 11/26/2009. Google cannot ignore critics on the grounds of being the leading search engine.

Cyber Criminality - a big growth Industry !!

December 15, 2009

Cyber crime poses threat to e-commerce | www.cnn.com

Cyber Criminality is not just a menace or irritant but a burgeoning industry with big profits/players who are out for pure commercial gain and/or causing serious security disruptions.Victims can vary from individuals to companies both in private as well as public domains with disastrous financial loss or loss of trust/security and often with global impact.Botnet attacks ( with large collections of infected servile computers) are not only dangerous but becoming increasingly commonplace.

Google's Privacy Strategy- a sequel

Google refuses to remove 'offensive and racist' Michelle Obama's image | www.guardian.co.uk

Google's responsibilities re content ( via Street View e.g.) as well as Search facilities cannot be easily shrugged off by contending ( as Google has ) that it has acted lawfully!!As a leading provider of search facilities,it has moral and legal obligations to monitor selection/content and exercise judgement on its legal rights and responsibilities.A failure to do so would lend itself into legal battles/tougher legislation at home and abroad to protect against offensive and risky content.

Microsoft thrown out of court in an IPR lawsuit in China

November 18, 2009

Chinese court rules against Microsoft | edition.cnn.com

China's reputation among the leading suppliers/global players like Microsoft , Motorola Inc. and Apple does not carry much credence with respect to numerous IPR battles taking place locally. In spite of high level representations by diplomats,trade/commerce officials and leading politicians, China seem to have turned a deaf ear to complaints and maintained their self righteousness. This does not augur well for China and its future trade prospects with the west.

Switzerland sues Google over Street View privacy concerns

November 13, 2009

Swiss privacy watchdog to sue Google Street View | webcenters.netscape.compuserve.com

Google has been seriously challenged by several EU countries ( such as Germany,Greece and now Switzerland ) as to its claims that it is within its legal rights re privacy infrigements via Street View and other related services . In the light of mounting abuse of GPS data via serious hackers ( even institutional spy networks ) it is hardly any wonder that EU has taken a tougher stand ( compared to USA ) regarding data protection regulations and laws even for private individuals.

Indian Mobile Operators align for market share battle!!

November 11, 2009

Idea Cellular sees industry margins coming under pressure | www.totaltele.com

Whilst Indian Mobile market is nowhere as mature as China;it faces common pressures to Chinese market inasmuch as base price of handsets ,call rates charged by operators and their profit margins as well as competitive products ( eventually from foreign suppliers) will play increasingly important/critical role in the battle for revenue/market share.Indian mobile market is strongly constrained in its growth potential by global downturn and by price of products/services in the local market.

How safe is Apple's IPhone?

November 11, 2009

Worm attack bites at Apple's IPhone | news.bbc.co.uk

Worm attack on so-called "jail-broken" Apple's IPhone in Australia shows how easy it is to hack its software and vulnerable smart phones are to virus attacks-threatening security of 3GS based software/networks!! This is a severe threat/major problem with Grey/Black market Apple's IPhone handsets sold illegally or exported from China worldwide since they form such a large segment of the total market sales.- see my analysis dated 11/06/2009 titled "China -a future bonanza for Apple's IPhone?"

China-a future bonanza for Apple's IPhone ?

November 6, 2009

China's smartphone shipments to triple by 2013 | www.totaltele.com

Future market prospects for Apple's IPhone launch this week in China are not as rosy due to high price, grey market/black market sales, poor service performance by China Unicom, frauds relating to Apps Store. In addition, other market factors such as competitors( also for Apps ) and relative maturity/growth patterns exhibited by the Chinese market as well as technical issues (see my previous analyzes) pose threats. see also http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/11/04/china.iphone/index.html

WWW to be truly global ?

November 1, 2009

web to be truly worldwide at last | news.bbc.co.uk

As per a recent meeting in Seoul,S.Korea and ICANN's (Internet Corp. for Assigned Numbers and Names ) decision to allow users to choose full web and e-mail addresses using non-Latin character sets means the end of a TRULY world wide web and not the beginning!!It will most certainly lead to further defragmentation of the WWW and all that implies in terms of globally accepted standards and policies re content, security, best practices industrywide as well as interoperability of products/devices.

Oracle/Sun Integration- a lost cause?

October 25, 2009

EU warns Oracle over Sun Takeover | news.bbc.co.uk

Latest warnings from EU trade commissioner in Brussels Neelie Kroes re Oracle's Sun takeover bid alleging lack of compelling beneficial evidence on part of Oracle in the midst of boastings from Oracle CEO Larry Ellison about their competitive edge vis-a-vis IBM ,does not augur well in the marketplace.Instead it has damaged Sun's market position ( as mentioned in my previous comments -) as Sun has announced loss of 3000 jobs amidst loss of market share/revenue and gloomier future prospects.

Apple's iPhone dominance threatened by Nokia's intellectual property lawsuit

October 23, 2009

Apple increases iPhone sales 7% to 7.4 mln in Q3 | www.telecompaper.com

Apple's market performance with iPhone faces increasing threats from competitors: a. Products based on Google's Android operating system .b. International market challenges, in China e.g. c. Legal/technology based threats/challenges from Nokia e.g. http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/22/technology/Nokia_Apple_lawsuit/index.htmd. Market growth constraints due to customer dissatisfaction with poor service, performance and unstable software owing to premature market launch .

Chinese Mobile market- growth patterns emulating a relatively mature market

October 21, 2009

China Mobile sees sharp slowdown in profit growth | www.totaltele.com

The three major Chinese telecom suppliers and 3G license holders( China Mobile , China Telecom and China Unicom ) depict revenue/profitability trends ( based on figures released recently ) indicating a market at a maturity level comparable to Europe,USA,Japan etc. in the late 1990's/early 2000's years. It implies fierce competition between them re pricing, service and related product/technology offerings and also interplay between fixed line, old mobile and 3G technologies and beyond.

Google's Android's popularity could be its major downfall

October 19, 2009

Android's Spread Could Become a Problem | www.businessweek.com

In the absence of a recognized international standard supported by major mobile producers(e.g. Open Handset Alliance) for their use of operating systems software such as Android and Symbian;the widespread and rapid growth of users/manufacturers using Android etc. are bound to face major problems regarding commonality of software and interoperability of devices. It would also lead to serious stability, security and performance problems as highlighted in several of my previous analysis.

Apple eyes the Chinese market with iPhone

September 20, 2009

Apple, Facing Competition, Readies iPhone for Launch in Giant China Market | online.wsj.com

Apple's ability to launch iPhone into the Chinese market is seriously in doubt given their technical problems with OS 3.1 in addition to other issues mentioned in the WSJ article -see my analysis of 20th Sept. 2009 titled "Google VOIP apps via Mobile -a trilogy". It will be clearly disastrous to prematurely launch into such a big and a novel market where Apple wants to establish a good reputation and an enviable market position by rushing into a premature launch of an unreliable product.

Google VOIP apps via Mobile -a trilogy

September 20, 2009

Apple sends iPhones into 'Coma Mode' | www.theregister.co.uk

iPhones launch by Apple was clearly premature as mentioned in my previous analyzes dated July 22 2009 titled "Google VOIP apps via Mobile ( blackberry etc.)"and dated 31st July 2009 titled "Google VOIP apps via Mobile-a sequel".Like many premature deliveries (babies e.g.),it comes with health complications ( including sending the baby iPhones into a coma!! ). This tendency to rush into a premature market launch is linked to the desire to be the first in the market place... etc. etc.

Oracle/Sun integration revisited - a trilogy!!

September 8, 2009

Oracle’s Sun deal snagged in Brussels | www.ft.com

This decision by EU Commission to scrutinize and investigate the merger in depth was not totally unexpected as the author suggests. See my original analyzes dated 23rd and 29th July.Given EU's strong stance relating to Microsoft's Windows it was widely expected. This will seriously damage Sun Inc.'s precarious market/financial position and considerably reduce the chances of a successful and profitable merger. It will cast serious doubts on any major future merger/takeover bids by Oracle.

IBM's partnering with venture capitalists in Brazil -an appraisal

August 26, 2009

IBM ties up with Brazil venture capitalists | www.eetindia.co.in

IBM's partnership with venture capitalists in Brazil for local digital infrastructure etc. will undoubtedly be a tremendous boost to both IBM and local companies. There is no doubt that IBM's track record in this respect is second best to none. Caution needs to be applied as per my comments on IBM's local Indian market growth prospects. see my comments on GLG news analysis for :http://www.seekingalpha.com/article/157411-ibm-s-footprint-is-strong-in-india)

IBM's GIANT footprints in India -a critical view of the GIANT's future prospects

August 26, 2009

IBM's Footprint Is Strong in India | seekingalpha.com

IBM's Indian presence is formidable and second best to none.Nevertheless,I do not share the author's optimism on IBM's growth prospects within the domestic Indian market.I strongly disagree with the contention by author that "BRIC region is growing rapidly and spending growth should outpace developed economies". Main reasons: 1. Local long term GDP/spending growth can falter-even if it is better in short term than in the developed economies. 2. Traditional export orientated mentality.
