Due to poor sales, Pfizer has decided to pull the plug on Exubera (inhaled insulin).  This will have a signficant impact on other companies who are developing other inhaled insulin products.

U.S. urges strongest warning on 2 diabetes drugs | www.iht.com

The FDA has now mandated a black box warning regarding the risk of heart failure related to the drugs Avandia and Actos (Glaxo Smith Kline and Takeda).  This comes after a highly publicized article in the New England Journal of Medicine that assessed the risk of heart disease and death in patients treated with rosiglitazone (Avandia).  The recent media coverage and congressional hearing has prompted this warning, and the concern about these prescription drugs will have a significant impact.

New Data Confirm That Use Of Levemir® Can Limit Weight Gain | www.medicalnewstoday.com

This study evaluated a large number of patients treated with Levemir.  When patients are started on insulin therapy, one side effect is frequently weight gain.  This study demonstrated that Levemir did not result in weight gain, but rather weight loss (small amount).
