The patients are not experiencing acute exacerbations of their asthma.  Since Zileuton is already avaialble in an oral formulation, why would patients who aren't having acute concerns want an injection?  Why was the IV not compared with the oral?  If it is more effective, it may be worth using, but if equivalent, there may be no benefit.

When patients elect to follow any physician advice, they are in effect demonstrating that they have weighed the costs of that advice (time, money, lifestyle modifications, etc) with the expected benefits.  All too often, however, patients do not understand or grossly underestimate the costs of not taking the advice.    This article highlights a simple point: physicians are, at bottom, life consultants.  They can provide advice, based usually upon research or concensus opinion, but must also educate patients on the pros and cons of each approach.  Patients must also be aided in recognizing the difference between and consequences of active as opposed to passive decisions.
