Article describes the number of children and adolescents having bariatric surgery, or gastric bypass. According to the article, no one knows exactly how many adolescents are turning to surgery to get thinner. One of the few studies, published in 2007, reported this surgery in teenagers was relatively rare but rising fast: from 2000 to 2003 (the last year examined), the number of operations tripled, to about 800. Medical practitioners do not know the longer term consequences of this procedure.

Medical tourism is popular already but many of those seeking care come from countries with less well developed services and tend to visit Western hospitals, rather than the reverse. There remains a need for basic health care services in Ghana (and elsewhere) but this does not seem to cater for any but the affluent.

H1N1 is a deadly strain of flu that has caused the White House to declare an emergency. The CDC says that instead of having 40 million doses of vaccines available there are only 28 - 30 million. On Friday an anti-viral was given emergency use authorization which allows it to be used even though it is not yet approved. This raises hope for Sinovac which has an H1N1 vaccine ready.
