Have you heard of the saying "stick to your knitting"? Well the concept cannot be more fitting than reading the concept that mobile phones would replace credit cards. I can see a transfer of funds from one account to another. However replacing credit cards for payment of goods will not come to fruition for the following reasons: a) Interoperability; I can take my Credit card anywhere in the world and it will work. Not so likely with a mobile phone. b) Consumer disputes are easily handled with credit card companies. Disputing a point of sale transaction conducted by a mobile phone is very tricky. c) The mobile phones are not as reliable as plastic cards. How often do you find yourself rebooting a phone? Mobile phone companies have attempted to disintermediate payment cards for the past decade with no tangible results. Just look the multiple at which payment card companies trade on the New York Stock Exchange compared to the telecommunication industry. Investors know the value.
