March 31, 2009

The three main points of this analysis are: Original IP does better than licensed IP in the MMO arena, so Marvel Universe has a tough row to hoe right out of the gate; Story-driven IPs such as the Marvel superhero universe are very hard to translate into the mainly non-story MMO genre of games; The superhero genre has unique issues for MMO development that will cost more and take longer to develop.
The Casual Gamer is the ONLY new market for consoles
June 26, 2007
Kinder, not killer, video games | www.iht.com
Some points to consider while reading the article: - The casual market in PC games has always been large; look at the sales for such games as Deer Hunter, Tetris and The Sims. If anything is going to attract non-traditional gamers to pick up the console controller, it is casual games; - Hard-core games have calcified into a rigidly hit-driven market that requires an extreme amount of money and know-how to approach. The business model is unsustainable for all but the wealthiest publishers and developers; - Casual games are taking off in Asia, as well, especially online. Look at Kart Rider in South Korea; over 40 million registered accounts, most of which have purchased at least one power-up or personalization item.
