Gazprom buys Kovykta field | www.upstreamonline.com
It is reported that Gazprom has gained control of the assets of the bankrupt Rusia Petroleum operator (a TNK-BP subsidiary) of the huge Kovykta gas field in Eastern Russia at auction today, and will obtain the right to develop the deposit. At a reported price of around USD773 million this must be seen as a real bargain

Indonesia Asks Inpex To Build LNG Plant Onshore Instead of Offshore | www.downstreamtoday.com
Is this another indication that the FLNG (Floating LNG) projects are now too expensive or that the Indonesian Government wishes greater control and local content for the LNG plant?
Nabucco – more US interference can’t help

US says Russia can supply gas to Nabucco | www.upstreamonline.com
It is reported that the US special energy envoy has said that “Russia is free to supply gas to the Nabucco pipeline and countries participating in the project must accept it as a partner”. Well, as a European my comment is – Butt Out! We, in Europe, are becoming increasingly depressed by the variety of US special (?) envoys that continue to meddle in the Caspian region regarding gas supplies to Europe. This is not an anti-US stance but we are big boys & girls now and are more than able to sort it out for ourselves, thank you. (Or possibly not in the case of the EU per se).

Nigeria, Algeria set to sign Trans-Saharan Pipe Deal | www.downstreamtoday.com
The European Union, which has whole-heartedly given its support to the project, sees it in terms of both security of supply for the future and also in terms of diversity of supply to further distance Europe from Russian gas imports. With the other EU sponsored pipeline (Nabucco) not moving anywhere fast, is this a case of a "pipe too far"?

Is the EU in danger of losing Azeri gas? | www.europeanvoice.com
Russia and Gazprom have once again circumvented an uncoordinated and lack-lustre EU activity in the region and managed to hammer home one of the last nails in the coffin of Nabucco pipeline.

Tapping into geopressure | www.timesonline.co.uk
The British Sunday Times newspaper reports that an entrepreneur Andrew Mercer plans to harness the pressure of natural gas to generate electricity. Mercer’s scheme is to tap the high pressure at which gas emerges from underground to drive turbines and generate electricity. Late next year Mercer’s “geopressure” company, called 2OC, will generate its first power at a gasworks in Becton, east London in the United Kingdom.

EU and Central Asian gas | www.upi.com
The EU feels that it has strengthened its hand, and substantially weakened Russia’s, following its “successful” April meetings in Central Asian regarding natural gas supplies. Once again we are being fed a rosy glow by the Brussels diplomats but EU still doesn’t realise that tea & biscuits and friendly nods from the Turkmen president is unlikely to change anything in reality as there are other rules at play in this new Great Game.

Gazprom Seen in Talks on ExxonMobil's Sakhalin-1 | www.themoscowtimes.com
NOCs now have both the money and the political power to outbid the IOCs in almost every circumstance and this is "in spades" when we look at Russia. There is no doubt that Sakhalin 1 (and the rights for Sakhalin 3) will go the same way as the Shell deal arranged for Sakhalin 2, with ExxonMobil having to settle for a minority share (or leave which is extremely unlikely) and Gazprom taking minimum 51% plus control of any dispersion of the resulting gas (and oil).

Gazprom to develop Nigerian gas reserves | business.smh.com.au

Electricty shortage in Russia | www.spiegel.de
This recent German article returns to the well-expressed point that there are perceived and potential shortages in the availability of natural gas due to lack of investment for power generation within the Russian Federation. Russia does however have the largest gas reserves in the World. Is this a case of “export for cash” versus “gas for the people” or a gross simplification?
