Airbus have announced firm plans for their re-engined star performer, and we are pleased to see our predictions from 9 months ago coming finally to some fruition, especially after watching other forecasters and analysts somehow come down with cold feet and CYA-itis over the last several weeks.  We suppose if you promote two opposing viewpoints, you can always say you were right, especially at bonus time.

In light of the impressive strides made by the engine builders, and pressure from airline operators, this whole subject seems to have recently gone from possibly to probably, and sooner rather than later.  If so, this will be a huge shift in terms of some analyst's future market value assumptions and asset-backed investors will need to focus management attention on these developments, which Airbus may sort out by Farnborough in July, and Boeing by the third quarter.

Remaining with oneworld and AMR was clearly a wise decision under the circumstances, and avoided the costs of switching and the risks of losing revenue during any transition to Delta/SkyTeam.  Perhaps more importantly, this will also limit JAL's exposure to future uncertainties which are still a function of the shaky global economy, and their own structural and operational troubles.

The financial predicament of JAL has led to a potential reshuffling of the world's main airline alliances centered on the world's most important growth market.  An alliance link with JAL is valuable due to their bilateral route rights, slots, and flights throughout Asia, even though they are currently on financial life support.  American will most likely succeed in keeping them in oneworld.
