Distance Does Wonders...And so does cash; How the recession changes people's vision of online dating
March 23, 2009
Looking for Love in a Down Economy | www.apa.org
Attitudes about online dating will change overall due to the recession, regardless of whether people feel more persuaded or dissuaded to find love. Online dating trends will change drastically. The perceived value of the paid online dating experience will erode. Paid online sites will take a hit, because they are paid. However, the paid sites have invested in equating paid online dating with value, so the people who "go away" will not necessarily migrate to unpaid sites. The investment in ad campaigns for paid sites like eHarmony will not net the return expected. The perceived value notion created will live, but it will not be supported by spending over time due to the recession. Unpaid sites will not necessarily gain share, since they are perceived as lower quality. However, the saving grace of the online dating (unpaid) industry may be sex. People may go online for a faster fix, or to find chemistry and companionship vs. to embark on a stressful long-term relationship quest.
