Biogen Idec has restructured their agreement with Biovitrum in Hemophilia thus increasing their investment in clinical trials and their commercial stake in the products.The company with the most to lose is Baxter International who has been working on a long-acting version of their product Advate for the last several years. Unlike Biogen who has announced a phase 2/3 study, Baxter is still in phase I.Long-acting versions of proven biotech drugs have proven to be market changers for companies like Amgen.

While the recent acquisition of Dimebon was a mediocre stopgap in their approach to Alzheimer's, a dedicated approach to Regenerative Medicine should provide longterm growth in multiple therapeutic areas including neurodegenerative diseases and cardiology. Nevertheless, regen med is not a typical area of drug development and requires an integrated approach of matrices, cells, biologics, and devices. This will require further acquisitions of key players and a unique R&D structure that draw across disciplines that usually sit in different companies. This announcement is a key first step in delivering on the vast potential of this area.
