The opinion written by a panel of scientists, including a few who consult for pharmaceutical companies, and published in the journal Nature that healthy people should be able to use drugs such as Ritalin to increase memory and brain power is shocking. By definition, drugs are not intended for healthy people. Most drugs are approved based on a demonstration that the risks they pose, and all drug pose some risks, are balanced by the benefits they provide in light of the condition suffered by the user.

While the WSJ Health Blog posting, Coke and Pepsi Stoked for Stevia After FDA Green Light, is undoubtedly correct that Coke and Pepsi are pleased to be able to use their respective stevia-derived sweeteners in beverages, the posting is incorrect in stating that "FDA gave the nod" to the ingredient. The truth is that FDA issued letters stating that they had "no questions" regarding the GRAS (generally regarded as safe) filings from the beverage makers.
