Solar "may" rival coal does not equal solar "will" equal coal costs
April 15, 2011
Solar Costs May Already Rival Coal, Spurring Installation | www.bloomberg.com
The article suggests that solar energy costs may come down to coal energy costs in the next 10 years, but this rosy scenario has two large flaws: first, 10 year forecasts are unlikely to have a high certainty of coming true -- the time interval is just too long to build in all the variables. Second, solar energy is still fundamentally dependent on sunshine -- solar cells do not generate power at night or even more than a trickle on overcast days.
Climategate will hurt biofuels
December 3, 2009
Interest in Biofuels | online.wsj.com
The recent revelation that East Anglia University's Climate Research Unit actively suppressed research findings contrary to the "received wisdom" of Global Warming, has severely damaged the credibility of the UN's IPCC predictions, which relied heavily on this institution's research findings. This in turn will sharply undercut the necessity to subsidize biofuels in order to replace standard oil- and natural gas-based fuels.
It's About Time Someone Said the Emperor Has No Clothes

The Energy Disconnect | www.energytribune.com
Global warming has become global cooling over the past 10 years, a cycle that was also observed between 1940 and 1975 -- carbon dixoide-caused warming theory cannot explain these patterns. It is clear that there is no genuine scientific evidence that ties man-made CO2 emissions to global temperature changes. The fact that those who promote "global-warming theory" try to quash any scientific debate reveals that there is little science behind their views but a very strong political agenda.
BASF sees reduced nylon 6 demand ahead

BASF to Close Permanently Nylon-6 Plant in Germany | chemweek.com
BASF is shutting down an East German nylon 6 plant that it acquired from Allied some years ago. BASF will evidently not replace this loss of capacity.
Alternative energy investments a risky bet
June 2, 2009
Economy, environment muddle oil outlook | www.reuters.com
Despite many speeches by government officials promoting alternative engeries, the economics of these sources make them completely dependent on goverment subsidies for their development and use. Example: when US wind energy subsidies expired in early 2008, financing collapsed until the US Congress passed new tax credits for wind energy programs. Likewise, the use of corn to make ethanol for bleinding into gasoline is completely dependent on subsidies to be even close to oil- and gas-based gasoline; a special tariff keeps Brazilian ethanol (made from sugar cane) from entering the US, even though would be far cheaper to use. Investors have been burned many times in the past by putting money into projects that were dependent on government largess and alternative energy projects are no exception. Investors would do well to remember the Carter adminsitration's US Synthetic Fuels Corporation that was defunded in the next administration. Caveat emptor.
