Think 1979 and 1980 the implications are clear if the government and companies dont act decisively the economy is heading for a pyschologincal nosedive. The war in Iraq, Oil demand from the devloping & related rise in food prices as well as dipping real estate prices are causing our economic downturn.

E-Trade Adds 16,000 Accounts in January, but Total Client Assets Fall 12 Percent | biz.yahoo.com

I dont think the cause and effect are related if anything the opening of 16,000 accounts probably mitigated outflows from exsisting accounts. The fact that assets dropped a rate greater than the market leads me to think that there were significant outflows from exsisting accounts or the holdings of Etrade clients were more tech heavy than the NASDAQ Composite which fell 10% during the month. In retail brokerage inflows of assets are typically strong in the first and fourth quarter with april (for tax payments-showing outflows) and the slow summer months showing relflecting lack of customer interest.
