Sewage-to-Energy Reduces Sludge, Generates Electricity
June 16, 2010
Treating wastewater is expensive. Yet, 70% of the cost to run a wastewater treatment plant is in two elements: electricity to power the aeration blowers and residual sludge treatment. An emerging technology promises to eliminate those costs. The treatment method, Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs), developed by a number of companies including Emefcy, an Artemis Top 50 Company, reduces energy consumption to zero, produces green electricity to be fed into the grid and reduces excess sludge by 80%.

The World Resources Institute, General Electric and Goldman Sachs Launch Initiative to Measure Water Risks and Opportunities. | www.genewscenter.com
The project by WRI, GE and Goldman Sachs to produce a Water Index to standardize water-related corporate risk shows that water has become an immediate issue for corporations. This metric will provide a way of comparing the relative risk that each corporation faces in the water-strapped world that stands before us. Some companies have begun focusing on the importance of water-related risk management; the Water Index will provide a means for understanding the cost of that risk to their operations.
