Proteolix Initiates Phase 2 Clinical Trial of Carfilzomib in Patients with Relapsed Solid Tumors | www.pipelinereview.com
The data from this phase Ib study will allow Proteolix to proceed with a phase II study of their novel proteasome inhibitor Carfilzomib in patients with advanced solid tumors. Rituxan and Lupus: Is there Hope for the Nephritis Study?
May 2, 2008
Genentech and Biogen Idec Announce Top-Line Results From Phase II/III Clinical Study of Rituxan in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus | www.pipelinereview.com
This large study did not show any benefit for Rituxan in a general lupus population. But, patients with nephritis - a common kidney complication - were specifically excluded from this study and are specifically being studied with Rituxan in the LUNAR study, which will yield results in early 2009. It should be noted that Rituxan has recently shown promising activity treating other kidney ailments, including Hepatitis C associated cryoglobulinemic glomerulonephritis, idiopathic membranous nephropathy, and glomerulosclerosis.

Data suggests promising overall survival and progression-free survival with Vargatef(TM) (BIBF 1120) | www.pipelinereview.com
This study is notable for several reasons: (1) it looked at 2 dose of BIBF 1120 and found essentially no difference in tumor control between the higher and lower dose regimens; (2) it included only patients who had previously received chemotherapy, and therefore, by definition, were less likely to have a good response (than in chemo-naïve patients); (3) healthier patients –described as “performance status 0-1”- demonstrated reasonable control of their tumors and reasonable survival rates. Put together, this is all encouraging, considering that they all had incurable, previously treated, advancing lung cancer and were only taking these new pills.

Oral PBI-1402 Demonstrates Significant Activity in Chemeotherapy-Induced Anemia Phase II Clinical Trial | www.pipelinereview.com
While only a Phase II study, it suggest that Oral PBI-14 may be of significant help to cancer patients who suffer from anemia caused by their chemotherapy. http://www.pipelinereview.com/content/view/19152/109/ This is especially notable given the recent saftey concerns about and decline in use of Procrit and Aranesp - the only other drugs typically used to treat chemotherapy-induced anemia.
