Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper reported on the delays associated with Iogen Corporation on building a commercial scale ethanol plant using forestry waste and wheat straw. Although the firm has key partners with large balance sheets, the economics behind the technology seems suspect compounded by horrible credit markets and more recently lower oil prices.

The EPA will complete engine testing of higher ethanol inclusion rates by May, 2010 compiling the data to make a decision on potentially higher blend rates (15%) of ethanol into the gasoline. The current maximum allowed blending rates are 10%. Rates of 35% are already used in Brazil where all car manufactures and small engine manufactures sell similar engines as the United States.

Brazil and other countries will continue to clear virgin land and move the land into production regardless of a biofuels strategy in the United States. Contrary to the indirect land use argument, the USA is still idling productive land in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Slowly, the USA is moving back to fence row to fence row production similar to the early 1970's.
