Drugs to Build Bones May Weaken Them | www.nytimes.com

1. This study may not have a big impact on the prescriptions of alendronate in the short term unless this problem is found to be more wide-spread. With the increased incidence of jaw necrosis reported earlier, physicians will carefully weigh the benefits before starting alendronate. 2. The fractures were found to be in patients who had taken alendronate for an average of 6.9 years. Physicians may consider stopping the medication after 5 years of use as most of the efficacy is seen in the earlier years of treatment anyway. 3. This type of fracture was identified only with the use of alendronate and not the other bisphosphonates. Physicians may choose to use the other medications rather than alendronate.
