Over its nearly 50 year history, Walmart has continually sought to lower costs throughout its supply chain, most recently through its sustainability initiative. In combination with its announced strategic alliance with Li & Fung Limited to source apparel, Walmart's Global Merchandise Centers are intended to better leverage its massive scale to lower costs and improve lead-times throughout its supply chain.

Black Friday saw a surprising sales increase of 3% over last year with luxury sales up 2.4%. Retailers took aggressive markdowns (from 40% to 70% off) and did not stint on promotional efforts to get the word out to shoppers. The good news? Shoppers showed up in droves, filled up their carts, and pulled out their wallets. With expenses and inventory levels generally tightly managed in anticipation of a grim holiday selling season, the level of markdowns taken to attract sales this year's Thanksgiving weekend should not throw P&L's too far out of kilter. This weekend's sales were a positive surprise.

We all know that "retail is detail" but so often retailers fail to execute on the fundamentals that most correlate with a positive customer experience: clean stores, easy navigation, clear signing, good in-stock and fast checkout. Now that Wal-Mart has these retail basics in place, then customers are more likely to return and become regular, loyal shoppers. And with the fundamentals in place, well-edited assortments and relevant brands can shine.
