If we had learned to spell HIPAA correctly, this wouldn't be a surprise.

Electronic Patient Records will Force Consolidation in Health Care | bits.blogs.nytimes.com
The "P" in HIPAA stands for Portability, not Privacy. The government has had the final goal of socialization of the medical industry in mind for quite a while. We have made the transition easier for them by providing the statistics and our evidence based information for them to use.

Autism, the universal disorder

Autism linked with rainfall in study | www.boston.com
As is stated in this article, autism has been linked, to some degree or another, to just about anything that a pregnant woman comes in contact with. This combined with the potential exposure of the newborn to foreign substances makes for a circus environment for the search for the true cause of this disorder. The fact that autism is undergoing a redefining itself, makes it even more difficult. It is time to start serious, scientific debunking of all these "theories" and focus on the problem which is growing and needs attention before it reaches epidemic proportions, if it has not already.

Brain boost drugs 'growing trend' | news.bbc.co.uk
When I hear, "If these cognitive enhancing drugs make our lives better and make us better able to concentrate and better able to perform, this would surely be a good thing." my mind logically relates this to the well known performance enhancing drugs used by some athletes. Not to say that these "brain boosters" have the same deleterious side effects of steroids, but the fact that dependency and abuse are known already, what are we in for down the road. There are classes of cognitive enhancing chemicals that have a long history of safe use such as the nutritional supplements (choline, ginko, etc.) and even they have potential problems associated with them if used in a manner not intended. These prescription drugs have a more far reaching danger if left to the discretional use of the individual. It would seem that more in-depth study of these enhancement medications and their effect on the normal population is warranted in a preemptive measure to reduce future problems.

Task force: Colon cancer screenings can stop at 75 | news.yahoo.com
In this age of evidence based practice and risk/profit mentality, the idea that a person’s age should be reason to exclude them from tests that could benefit sounds a little too Malthusian. The committee saw little rational to continue testing beyond the age of 75. Each day we are bombarded with information indicating that life expectancy is increasing and diagnostic testing is becoming more advanced. The tests reported in this article are not done to determine the presence of a minor infection, but a life threatening disorder. Age should not be a factor. If the patient does not have the ability to undergo colonoscopy due to health issues, however, this should certainly be considered. This article proposes that which it cannot defend, for the present. Under a socialized, money driven healthcare system it could. For the present, however, preventive screening and early detection remain in the patient’s best interest.
