The Case For Kindle DX as Textbook Platform

May 18, 2009

Amazon.com Said to Be Releasing New Version of Kindle (Update1) | www.bloomberg.com

When Jeff Bezos unveiled the Kindle DX last week at Pace University, the hoopla was abut the new Kindle being a solution to textbooks.   Why are Textbook Publishers eager to experiment with the Kindle DX?   There are essently three main strategies the textbook companies want to explore:   1.  They want to sell direct to students, bypassing the bookstore.  This gives the a direct tie to the end user, and cuts out bookstor distribution and discounts to those sellers. 2.  They want to eliminate the used book market for print textbooks by providing a license for a digital version that is locked into the Kindle.  Used books account for almost 40% of annual textbook sales. 3.   The publishers want more integration with their web delivered programs that support print.  For example, Pearson has a Web Companion for most books, and have launched learning tools such as MyMathLab, MySpanishLab, etc.  CourseSmart is not working. Let's see what Kindle does. Why do colleges want it?
