Until now, companies wishing to deploy a cloud strategy basically had two choices: utilize a well-defined, but shared service like Amazon AWS, or build their own from a collection of products and services from different vendors. The industry is now enjoying a flurry of activity around the definition of standard “building blocks” for cloud computing. The Open Compute Project, Open Stack and the Open Data Center Alliance are poised to bring structure to the cloud.

VMware has laid out an ambitious plan with its Virtual Data Center Operating System (VDC-OS).  Much hype has been made of how VDC-OS will be the enabler of the cloud computing infrastructure of the future. But several obstacles may prevent VMware from gaining the entrenchment required to fend off competition from Microsoft and others.  Price, vendor lock-in and ecosystem development are just a few of the challenges VMware will have to solve before it can become the cloud operating system of choice.
