A perfect storm encompassing dramatic changes in consumer behavior, disruptive technologies stimulating new competition, and the global economic recession is battering the long-complacent newspaper publishing sector. Publishers are simultaneously challenged by declining revenue, anachronistic cost structures, and unsustainable capital structures that are a legacy of better times, and are taking drastic measures for self-preservation. Despite these challenges, they retain important competitive advantages which -- if they can survive the short-term -- can result in entities which once again provide attractive cash flow to investors who take advantage of deeply discounted asset and enterprise valuations.
