GSK launches new specialist unit to research and develop medicines for rare diseases | www.pipelinereview.com

GSK announced a unit dedicated to development and commercialization of medicines for rare diseases. The rationale was more products of value, improved R&D return, and higher probabilities of success. Since 1983 FDA has granted 353 orphan drug approvals; 19 have achieved blockbuster status. Good science and good luck are required. Profits result from high prices and indication expansion but high pricing may threaten orphan drug legislation and prevent its expansion for personalized medicine.

Mass. Panel Backs Radical Shift in Health Payment | www.nytimes.com

Despite the Mass. scheme that all have health insurance, costs have risen at 6-9%/yr. To rein in health care costs, a high level commission suggests moving from Fee for Service to a Global Payment System that would compensate physicians for the care of patients on a periodic basis. Capitation reduces health care utilization but  lack of standard definitions and measurements will impede assessments of any impact on quality.  Less may be more but data are needed to answer this critical question.
