Internet structure changing, all piracy to be eliminated!

Cyberwar Hype Intended to Destroy the Open Internet | www.wired.com
I love a good conspiracy theory, and this selection from Wired Magazine spins a wonderful tale of cyberwar, stating that we need a Cold War strategy against internet threats. It is Cyberarmageddon! It doesn't sound totally far-fetched when you read through the government backers, and I propose that this is an interesting way to slow on line piracy of just about anything. It won't stop it, but it will make you think twice.

Disney to break windows | www.variety.com
Variety has a great article about the discussions between the Studios and the Exhibitors with regards to the shortening of the DVD windows. I get many inquiries about windowing, and this article does a good job of explaining the dynamics.
Bringing TV to the internet...why isn't everyone jumping on board?
February 8, 2010
Pushing to Bring TV to the Internet | online.wsj.com
The article is a nice one about changes within MOVE networks and their push to mirror services available on some smaller cable networks. I wonder what tension they will face as they try and move forward? A friend told me that the internet looks a lot like the cable TV landscape of the 80's. Trying to decide what pricing models for content look like.

Himax Unveils Innovative 2D to 3D Conversion Solution | money.cnn.com
Today, Himax Technologies announced a, "unique 2D to 3D conversion technology, which can convert any 2D image into 3D format in real time." They developed this technology in conjunction with a research institute in Taiwan. While this news is interesting in the context of increased 3-D content for home viewing or broadcast, it should have some limitations, and not be seen as a panacea.

BSkyB profit, sales up; to launch 3D TV in April | www.totaltele.com
Fortune telling at its best! I am not sure that I can predict the future any more accurately than anyone else, but I can comment on some things that have been brewing in the background for 3-D in the US. These interesting items may give the 3-D concept a little more horsepower than you thought.

BSkyB, always on the cutting edge
January 29, 2010
BSkyB profit, sales up; to launch 3D TV in April | www.totaltele.com
BSkyB to launch a 3D network in pubs for football matches? Of course, what else would you expect from this global leader of broadcasting risk-taking? As an American who has been delivering studio product to them for years, I am constantly impressed with their service offerings, new technology roll-outs, and broadcasting "stunts".

January 29, 2010
Retailers take aim at Redbox | www.variety.com
Wal-Mart and Target agree to restrict the number of copies of a new release an individual can purchase. They agree to the magic 28 day window after a DVD is released, the same amount of days that Netflix agrees to hold back on streaming video. While this article speaks to the sales power of Wal-Mart and Target, accounting for 40% of all DVD sales, it also offers up a commentary on the fragility of the studio's windowing policy.
Avatar Director James Cameron "warns" theaters about new TV's
January 14, 2010
3D TVs one-up theaters - Entertainment News, David Cohen, Media - Variety | www.variety.com
This article talks about James Cameron, AVATAR's director, and how he thinks that changing TV technology, especially high frame rate 3-D, will change the movie theater experience as well. He claims the color TV set drove movies to switch completely to color. I propose this could start the discussions around viewing movies in home the same day they premiere in a theater.
Controlling Content Vs. streaming to your living room
January 14, 2010
Wii Gets Netflix. Now What? | www.pcworld.com
This article speaks to the idea of accessing Netflix through your Wii. Offhand, it seems a yawn, no Blu-ray player and only a progressive, standard definition playout. However there is one tease in this article that points towards things to come: multiple access points for a wide array of big studio movies and series, but with a strict set of rules on how you can save, and share these titles.

January 6, 2010
MyTrevo | www.retrevo.com

This article gives a nice overview on what might be shown in this year's show, as well to links about what happened to the stars of last years show. I think that the topics covered for the TV offerings would be of interest to clients that I frequently engage with.

Comcast-NBC may herald films on demand before DVD | Reuters | www.reuters.com
In 2000, we were working on several cutting edge initiatives that were guaranteed to change how content was delivered and created over the next decade. As the decade changed, I was thinking about these initiatives and how they are relatively commonplace in the broadcast and studio environments today; and wondering what would be the new technologies and processes that we would take for granted a decade from now?
Further telecom/media convergence to create new market opportunities?
October 1, 2009
Cisco to buy Tandberg | www.bloomberg.com
On the edge of media distribution as we currently know it, these two companies provide valuable services and products and have exposure and knowledge about the video distribution marketplace. Is it hard to imagine a state where Cisco's networking and Tandberg's encoding and broadcast gear merge to provide a usable media product for large corporations, or perhaps consumers?
Upgrade for 3-D viewing at home
August 18, 2009
After Conquering the Movies, 3-D Viewing Makes Its Way Toward Home TVs | online.wsj.com
Whether it comes from physical media, or a download, the type of 3-D available in the local multiplex is far superior to what we are currently capable of receiving here in the States. The typical red-blue anaglyph glasses that we use at home limit the color spectrum available to view and make the 3-D less fun. The stereoscopic, polarized type glasses used by The Walt Disney Company when presenting a feature in Disney Digital 3D, for example, give a much better presentation.
