Hollywood's historical business model is successively releasing films exclusively through designated distribution channels with pricing based upon when the content is available and the quality of the viewing experience.   Consumers are rapidly embracing new digital entertainment distribution channels.  The Studio's need to adapt their business models to deliver content to their customers in their preferred method of delivery or risk the same fate as the recording industry.

'Star Trek' Boldly Lifts Paramount Out of Slump | online.wsj.com

Paramount's bet on their recent Star Trek movie is larger than the success of this individual title.  It is all about resurrecting a franchise for the Studio.  Today's feature film environment requires a Studio to have a couple of franchise titles that guarantee them minimum levels of success think Sony - Spiderman, WB- Harry Potter, Disney -Pirates, Fox - Xmen, etc.  Paramount desperately needed some franchises that provided opportunity for repeatable "episodes or movies.  Transformers was their first real success but they needed another.
