Google's newest Android prepares to battle Apple | edition.cnn.com
Cisco Systems (NSDQ:CSCO) and Tokyo-based Trend Micro are joining forces to bring security into Linksys by Cisco's wireless routers, executives said Tuesday. Trend Micro's new security service, known as the Home Network Defender, geared toward families and small businesses, aims to provide Internet security management and protection on PCs as well as other IP-enabled devices. The service, which is housed on select Linksys by Cisco's wireless-N routers, also is equipped to protect other network devices, such as Wi-Fi enabled phones, video game consoles and personal media players. For small business owners, parents and other users, the integrated security service baked in at the router level aims to reduce hassles users face adjusting security settings and deploying numerous endpoint security products, Trend Micro executives say.
Business intelligence usage on rise, revenue growth down

Sales of PCs to fall for the first time in eight years | www.ft.com
Although compound annual growth for revenue in business intelligence (BI) is expected to decrease, the usage of such tools and applications is poised to go through the roof, according to research from Gartner. One of the reasons for the expected slowing in revenue growth is that vendors are bundling business intelligence into infrastructure, applications and processes that end-users already work with, said Dan Sommer, senior research analyst of software markets for technology and service provider research at Gartner. Meanwhile, the usability of business intelligence tools is increasing, so it's becoming easier for end-users to make use of the technology. That translates into an increase in usage.

Not Everyone Sold On Cisco Blade Server Plans

High-Def Options Vie With Blu-ray | online.wsj.com
It's no secret anymore that networking behemoth Cisco Systems is plotting to throw its hat into the blade server ring, going toe-to-toe against market heavyweights Dell, HP and IBM to rule the data center. When Channelweb.com confirmed Cisco blade server rumors last month, some solution providers welcomed the idea with open arms. "We think it's a good thing for the market, for us and for Cisco," Jim Kavanaugh, CEO of World Wide Technology, a solution provider and Cisco partner, said in December. "We think it's a big space that has a lot of growth opportunities both short term and long term. I've got quite a bit of confidence in Cisco's management, and when they put their minds to something they make it work. It's going to be interesting how it plays out.

High-Def Options Vie With Blu-ray | online.wsj.com
Samsung Electronics on Tuesday unveiled its first enterprise-class solid-state drive aimed specifically at high-performance applications. The new drive, unveiled at the Storage Visions Conference in Las Vegas, offers 100-GB capacity and about ten times the performance of standard 15,000-rpm drives, the company said. Samsung grows an ever-longer list of storage vendors hoping to make solid-state drive technology ubiquitous this year. The new SS805 2.5-inch form factor drive reads data sequentially at 230 MB per second and writes sequentially at 180 MB per second. It features an 8-channel controller, improved NAND flash and new drive firmware, all of which were developed by Samsung. The drive also includes technology to allow all data in the process of being stored within the SSD to be preserved in the event of a power outage.
Nvidia Raises Bar On Netbook Graphics With Ion - The Channel Wire
January 5, 2009
Microsoft Web Browser Loses Ground | online.wsj.com
Nvidia looked at the rising popularity of netbooks and saw something missing -- visual performance of the quality many users in developed markets demand. So the graphics chip maker set to work building its Ion hardware platform for small form-factor notebooks and desktops built on Intel's Atom processors, and early returns suggest it could be a category killer. ChannelWeb saw Ion in action last Thursday at Nvidia's headquarters. The platform consists of an Atom-based motherboard paired with Nvidia's GeForce 9400 onboard graphics processor, full CUDA support and a frankly ridiculous amount of I/O.

Xerox Seeks To Reassure Investors - And Channel Partners - Amid Restructuring

Philips Says It Won’t Meet Profit Target Amid Slump | www.bloomberg.com
Despite the macroeconomic outlook for 2009 -- and the announcement, at the end of October that it would cut five percent (about 3,000 jobs) of its workforce over the next six months -- Xerox (NYSE:XRX) sought to reassure investors and industry analysts at its annual investor conference Monday in New York City that its position is solid. And both Anne Mulcahy, Xerox chairman and CEO and Russell Peacock, president, North American Channels Group, insisted in comments to Everything Channel that reseller relationships, which the printing vendor started to make an aggressive priority about four years ago, would remain vital to Xerox's ongoing strategy. Xerox's 3Q earnings call on Oct. 23 emphasized Xerox's steady growth in SMBs and its annuity-based businesses, but confirmed gross profit margins were hitting a roadblock -- especially with the news of a three percent drop-off in high-end equipment orders from large enterprises when compared with a year ago.

BlackBerry maker battles back | money.cnn.com
For months, self-proclaimed BlackBerry addicts, as well as Verizon (NYSE:VZ) Wireless users looking for a real iPhone killer (or something close to it), have been anxious to get their hands on the just released BlackBerry Storm (9530), Research In Motion (NSDQ:RIMM) (RIM)'s first touch screen BlackBerry. The Test Center got hold of a production unit to see how it stands up to expectations from the pre-shipping hype, and the mixed feelings that have been posted throughout the Web from those who tried one with pre-release beta software. Our first opinion is somewhere in between.
AMD's 45nm Phenom II Chips Overclocked To 6+GHz

Intel Net Rises 12%, but Outlook Is Uncertain | online.wsj.com
Hold the phone on handing the CPU performance crown to Intel's new Core i7 processors just yet -- the chip giant may yet have a fight on its hands in the coming months. Advanced Micro Devices demoed its upcoming 45-nanometer "Deneb" desktop chips -- now confirmed as Phenom II -- for reviewers in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, and reports are in that AMD overclockers were able to achieve clock speeds north of 6 GHz on the second-generation quad-core devices. How far north of 6 GHz? AMD spokesman John Taylor confirmed the basics of stories published by PC Perspective's Josh Walrath and Legit Review's Nathan Kirsch Thursday, but held back on outright endorsing the numbers originally cited in those stories. Respecting AMD's wishes, we'll just point out that PC Perspective's story now says, "The Phenom II reached WELL over 5.x GHz (read: REALLY over)." And another source gives a more specific number -- 6.3GHz, though again, that could not be confirmed by AMD.
Intel, AMD Square Off With Nehalem And Shanghai
November 24, 2008
Intel Net Rises 12%, but Outlook Is Uncertain | online.wsj.com
Intel (NSDQ:INTC), Santa Clara, Calif., and Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD), Sunnyvale, Calif., are finally back to where it all started when the personal computer boom kicked off in the early 1980s -- squaring off with chips that bear more similarities than differences. That sets the stage for the kind of competition between the two main x86 microprocessor makers that has system builders like Brian Corn energized for a lively 2009. "We're really going to be able to finally have an 'apples-to-apples' comparison on performance," said Corn, VP of marketing at Source Code, Waltham, Mass., discussing how Intel's new Nehalem processors will stack up against AMD's recently launched Shanghai chip
iPhone Vs. BlackBerry: Apple Now Has Bigger Slice Of The Pie
November 11, 2008
Apple's Furiously Fast Future | www.technewsworld.com
Huge gains by Apple's iPhone and continuing solid performance by Research In Motion's BlackBerry are driving a smartphone market that doesn't seem to be affected by the economic downturn. A report released by Canalys shows that Apple has grabbed 17.3 percent of the smartphone market, placing it second in the world with growth of 523 percent from third-quarter 2007 to third-quarter 2008. Meanwhile, RIM's share surged 83.5 percent to capture 15.2 percent of the smartphone market. Nokia still leads the pack with 38.9 percent market share, even though Nokia's market share shrunk 3.4 percent from third-quarter 2007 to third-quarter 2008, which marks the first time the Finnish mobile device producer has lost ground.
Microsoft Partners Impressed By Windows Azure

Azure: Can Microsoft Meld Windows with the Web? | www.businessweek.com
his week at Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)'s Professional Developer Conference, Microsoft executives took the wraps off Windows Azure, a new development platform for building cloud-based applications. In the opening keynote, David Thompson, corporate vice president of Microsoft Online, noted that Microsoft plans to eventually move all its enterprise software into the cloud. Although Azure was widely expected, some solution providers were surprised -- and pleased -- by the frankness of Thompson's declaration. "This is the boldest prediction I've heard yet, and it certainly sets a direction," said Dave Sobel, CEO of Evolve Technologies, a Fairfax, Va.-based Microsoft Gold partner.

A $6 million judgment against Cisco Systems (NSDQ:CSCO) in which a jury found that the networking vendor violated its reseller agreement and deal registration program with a small solution provider has other VARs wondering how this might impact their relationships with Cisco and other vendors. Now Cisco is ready to talk about the case, in which it was successfully sued by a former solution provider, Infra-Comm, and ordered by an Orange County, Calif. jury to pay damages. Bill Friedman, senior corporate counsel for Cisco, who was often seen sitting in the audience chairs during the trial, discussed how the case could impact the channel in e-mailed responses to questions from ChannelWeb, questions which were also answered Tuesday by Infra-Comm's attorney, Brian Daucher.

The jury in the cross-lawsuits trial between Cisco (NSDQ:CSCO) and a former Cisco solution provider has awarded the VAR damages of more than $6 million. The jury found that Cisco violated its reseller agreement and deal registration agreement with the solution provider, Infra-Comm, by cutting it out of a registered deal in favor of another VAR, which significantly harmed Infra-Comm's business. The verdict was reached on Monday after less than three hours of deliberations by the 12-person jury. Closing arguments in the trial were presented Friday afternoon.

Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) is dominating the headlines this week with its new MacBook line and first sub-$1,000 MacBook, but Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) insists that PC notebooks still give consumers far more bang for their buck. In an apparent bid to stifle the buzz around the new MacBooks, Microsoft has published a chart with the headline "After the Mac Refresh ... PCs are STILL a better value". According to a Microsoft spokesperson, the chart "was distributed to folks who closely follow Apple announcements" and "represents just a few examples of what you can get today."
