Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh dismissed U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's request to accept binding limits on carbon emissions (cap and trade) during their meeting in New Dehli.  India rejects the cap and trade approach because it would damage and/or limit its economic growth.

WSJ reports a slide of natural gas prices down to $3.283 due inability of U.S. Natural Gas Fund ("UNG") to win regulatory approval to issue new shares, thus preventing UNG to buy new contracts. UNG is a ETF (Exchange Trade Fund) trading house in natural gas. According to Citigroup UNG controls roughly one quarter to one third of Nymex and ICE open interests in natural gas.

XOM expands and aims for 1 bcfd at Piceance basin

Per the above cited O&GJ article XOM (ExxonMobil) has added 0.2 bcfd gas processing capacity to their Piceance shale gas gathering facilities.  Presently the company has seven drilling rigs operating producing 0.10 bcfd mostly from the Mesaverde formation.  With subsequent expansions the long term goal is to reach 1 bcfd of gas production.  According to XOM the shale gas is "trapped within rock as dense as concrete and in discontinuous zones separated by thin layers of shale".

Gas&Oil Journal News reports today the commissioning of two new land based LNG terminals, one in Chile and the other in the UK.  BG Group ("BG") is supplying the contracted LNG  to both terminals from their Atlantic LNG trains, located in Trinidad Tobago and has signed supply contracts for twenty years. BG is part owner of both terminals.

According to the cited WSJ article of today, XOM made a strong financial commitment of $600 million in the advanced algae research of Synthetic Genomics to turn algae into biofuels.  This is a serious long range investment and is backed by the well-respected reputation of biologist and biotech entrepreneur J. Craig Venter, the founder and CEO of Synthetic Genomics of La Jolla, California.

The Horn River shale field is located in northern British Columbia. The XOM exploration of SG in British Columbia is just the tip of the iceberg, representing XOM's focus on the long range global energy business.

In the windiest corner of Texas north of Amarillo Valero plans to provide 50 MW of wind power, about 45% of the power needs of their refinery built in the 1930s.  Valero is apparently embracing green technology to make more greenbacks in the production of gasoline and diesel in anticipation of the green benefits to be derived from the pending Obama climate legislation.

Ningxia Hanas Natural Gas Co., located in the province of Ningxia adjacent to Mongolia, has just awarded a contract to Technip for the construction of a midsize LNG plant of 100 MMSCFD (0.8 mta).  The plant will consist of two 50 MMSCFD trains based on Air Products liquefaction technology. The LNG will be distributed by specially designed trucks to the far away developed provinces on the Chinese East Coast.

DOE under management of the Noble laureate and leading nuclear physicist has selected four U.S. utilities to revive the nuclear industry.  $18.5 billion are to be split between Unistar Nuclear Energy, NRG Energy Inc., Scana Corp. and Souther Co. for loan guarantees to get their nuclear power plant projects to move ahead and be on line by 2015 to 2016.

Per Oil & Gas Journal of May 29 OAO Gazprom has ordered from Milan based Sirtec Nigi SPA the world's largest silica-gel gas treatment plant for the Nord Stream pipeline project.  The gas treatment plant will be located near Vyborg, Russia and will process 6 bcfd of natural gas.  After compression the gas will be send through the new 1,200 km Nord Stream subsea pipeline across the Baltic Sea to Greifswald on the German coast.

The Kitimat LNG export terminal to be built in British Columbia is scheduled to export 1 bcfd of LNG to the Pacific Rim countries like Korea and Japan. Korea Gas Corp. ("Cogas") has signed an MOU for as much as 40% of the terminal capacity.  The low North American NG prices are the driver for the project as well as the returning demands for LNG from Korea and Japan.
