Europe in a Bind Over Biotech Policy

August 24, 2009

EU stance on GM could decimate UK livestock production | www.farmersguardian.com

The EU's resistance to biotechnology is this year threatening to cause dire consequences for the EU's livestock and poultry industries. That is because regulators have found minute amounts of unapproved biotech corn events in soymeal made from U.S. soybeans. Under the EU's zero tolerance policy for unapproved biotech events this has forced the stoppage of about 200,000 mt of soymeal and effectively foreclosed the U.SD. as a source of soybeans and soymeal. That could be a disaster

American Soybean Association delegation meets with French industry | bioenergy.checkbiotech.org

Because of the severe drought which cut South American soybean production this year by over 20 mmt the EU will need to import large amounts of soybeans and soymeal from the U.S. However, that will not be possible unless the EU changes its policies quickly to allow imports containing trace amounts of unapproved corn events.

Global Soybean Shortage Could Become Major Surplus in 8 Months

July 25, 2009

Corn, Soybeans Decline as Cool, Wet Weather Boosts U.S. Yields | www.bloomberg.com

U.S. and foreign soybean stocks are extremely low right now as a result of strong demand and a poor crop in South America. However, if the weather cooperates the world may have a glut of soybeans in only about 8 months.

Biodiesel Mandate a Bad Idea

July 2, 2007

EU biodiesel firms blame politicians as demand falls | www.iht.com

The biodiesel mandate sought by the biodiesel sector would be a bad idea.  The U.S. lacks sufficient oils and fats to produce more than about 700 million gallons of biodiesel annually with major disruptions of vegoils to the food sector and over supplies of protein meals.  However, investors have announced plans to buil over 3 billion gallons of annual biodiesel capacity.  Rather than passing a biodiesel mandate which would cause major distortions to the food market the Congress should simply continue current biodiesel blending credits and allow the market to function.

Article Largely Correct

Hidden costs of corn-based ethanol | www.latimes.com

Ethanol will cause: Higher meat prices because of greater use of corn for ethanol rather than for feed. Reduced production of other crops like soybeans that also are needed. More monculture with the associated use of greater nitrogen fertilizer (made from natural gas) Increased vulnerability of the U.s. food and fuel supply from a drought or other yield-robbing disaster

Rush to Biofuels Fraught with Great Risks

January 12, 2007

No easy answers to ethanol dilemma | www.journalstar.com

The rush to subsidize ethanol and other biofuels is certain to cause problems.  Among these are making U.S. fuel consumers overly dependent on Mother Nature, undermining the domestic livestock sector, and raising food prices around the world.  Before further incentives are provided for biofuels, U.S. policymakers need to more carefully consider the ramifications of doing so.
