Convergence of Accounting Standards - Indian Perspective - Impact on global accounting practices

July 25, 2007

India to Internationalize Accounting Standards | www.webcpa.com

The  accounting  standards convergence movement has been  going forward since 1975 when  the  International  Accounting Standards  Committee was formed. India  started formulating its  own  standards  based  on  the  international  standards shortly  thereafter. In  this  analysis  I  look  at  the  accounting  standards  convergence movement  with  specific  reference to India, how  it  will  impact  the  global  flow  of  capital  and  why  some  countries  will  and  some  others  will not  follow  commonly  accepted  global  accounting  standards.

WSJ - The Fountainhead and the Gail Wynand Effect - What is the future of Business News?

July 24, 2007

A family meets today to hear the complexities of a bid for Dow Jones | www.nytimes.com

As the battle royale for WSJ continues one waits with baited breath as to the direction which the ownership of  this  highly venerated journal is going to take. The  significance of  the  transaction is  great and can effect in several ways  the  manner in which news is reported, analyzed and deciphered. In this analysis I look  at  the  effect  of  the  Dow Jones Saga as  it  moves  on.

The world of Voldemart and its relationship to CDO valuation and accounting fraud

July 18, 2007

Web abuzz over Potter Leak Claims | www.ft.com

The  realm of  CDO  valuation has  gained  great  significance  in  the  public  and  accounting  business  landscape  ever  since  two  of  the  Bear Stearns  hedge  funds  had  a  virtual  collapse  and  the  fall  of  New  Century  Financial. In  this  analysis  I  look  at  the  relationship  between  CDO  valuation  and  accounting  fraud. Since  I  believe  that  a  great  deal  of  the  relationship  can  be  explained  by  the  character  of  Voldemart  in  the  Harry  Potter  stories  I  have given  the  specific  name  to  this  analysis.

Fair value - Securities valuation - CDO and Related Instruments - Valuation Conundrums

July 17, 2007

FASB to form resource group on valuation guidance issues | www.fasb.org

Valuation  of  derivative  and  other  instruments is  a  contentious issue and  SFAS 157 on fair value accounting  has  only increased the number  of  questions raised  by  preparers, auditors and  users  of  financial statements. This  analysis  looks  at  the  kind of  questions  which  need  to  be  answered  in  the  context  of  the  formation of  the  new resource group  by  the  FASB.

Private Equity - Hedge Funds - London - Amsterdam - New York - Will Europe steal a march in the capital markets field?

July 12, 2007

London Seeks More Alternative Funds | www.ft.com

The US  is  doing  everything  possible  to  make life difficult  for hedge funds  and  fund managers  and  in  the  form  of  tax  and  regulatory  disincentives. Amsterdam  and  London  are  on  the  other  hand  using  this  opportunity to  strengthen  their  own  capital  markets  and  avenues  for  investment. This analysis  takes  a  look  at  the  role  and  divergent  trends  in  the  area  of  capital  markets  and  where  this  is  going  to  lead  the private  equity  and  hedge fund  trail.

Outsourcing - What keeps it going - The pro's, con's and future

July 9, 2007

Going Away | www.cfoasia.com

Outsourcing  draws  heated  debates  at  different  ends  of  the  world. In  the   US, UK  and  western  europe  a  sizable  number  view  it  as  a  loss  of  jobs  to  their  home  country. In  countries  like  India  it  is  seen  as  a  panacea  for  poverty  alleviation  and  a  way  to  catch  up  with  the  developed world  in  terms  of  economic  prosperity. What  makes  outsourcing  tick  however  is  not  emotions  but  plain economics. In  this  analysis  I  look  at  the  outsourcing  phenomenon,  where  it  is  heading and  what  to  expect  -  in  plain  simple  profitability  considerations.

UBS - DRCM - Hedge Funds - Sub prime mortgages - The impact on financial institutions, markets and managers

July 9, 2007

Day to day doubts led to end of UBS Chief | www.ft.com

The  continuing  problems  in  the  mortgage  and  subprime lending  segment, the  fall  of  Amaranth  and  now  the  ousting of  the  UBS  chief  ostensibly  for  the  problems  associated  with  the  Dilton Read Capital  Management  hedge  fund  are  all  indicators  of  changing  equations. In  this  analysis  I  look  at  the  industry  implications  in  the  context  of the  changing  scenario for  the  hedge  fund sector  and  subprime  mortgage segement  and  in  a  limited  context  with  reference  to  UBS.

Private Equity - Capital Markets - Hedge Funds - How far will financial disintermediation Go?

July 6, 2007

The business of making money | www.economist.com

The  nature  of  capital  markets  is  metamorphosing. Companies  do  not  prefer  public  money  for  the  moment   and  prefer  to  go  the  private  route. Private  equity  and  hedge  funds are  the  flavor  of  the  day. The  success  of  these  Institutions  and  the  relative  decline  of  exchanges  and  other  traded  capital  markets  for  large  capital  requirements  raises  a  number  of  important  questions. In  this  analysis  I  look  at  the  changing  equations  and  direction  of  private  equity  capital  flows.

The Mortgage Crises - Effects on Financial Markets - The imploding CDO segment - Effects on hedge fund portfolios

July 2, 2007

CDO's and Subprime Debt | www.ft.com

The  subprime  mortgage crises  appears  to  have  hit  a  large number  of  Institutions  and  individuals. New  rules  have  recently  been  released asking  lenders  to  give  a  60  day  notice  period  before  an  upward  revision  of  interest rates  for  borrowers  apart  from  several  other  safeguards  for  the  home owner. This  analysis  looks  at  the  nature  of  subprime  debt, the  way  the  new  rules  will  further  erode  the  value  of  CDO's  and  create  further  problems  both  for  the  borrowers and  the  Institutions  involved  in  subprime  lending  and  investing.

Auditors on the defensive worldwide - IV

June 25, 2007

Pwc withdraws Yukos audits | www.ft.com

Life  for  auditors  across  the  globe is  getting  tougher. Technical  areas like fair  value  and  Sarbannes  Oxley seem to be small  matters compared  to  the  impediments to independence. The latest case where a big  four  firm  has  withdrawn  its  audit reports  over  a  ten  year  period  just  shows  the  kind  of  pressures  that  auditors  operate  under. In  this  analysis  I  take  a  look  the  direction  of  audit  independence and  quality  in  the  face  of  virtually  insurmountable  official  pressures.

The Dow Jones Sale - Shifting Power Centers?

June 25, 2007

Dow Sends News Corp Editorial Proposals | www.ft.com

The  Dow Jones  sale  to  News Corp  seems  to  be moving. Other  bidders  have  withdrawn  and  the  Dow  Jones  board  has  now  taken  charge.  In  this  analysis  I  take  a  look  at  the  effects  from  the  possible viewpoint  of  financial  markets  at  the  effect  of  this  Dow - News Corp.  merger - it  it  materializes.

The Collapsing Hedge Funds - Hedge Funds come closer to regulation

June 21, 2007

Bear Sterns Staves off collapse of 2 hedge funds | dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com

The  recent  collapse  of  two  hedge  funds  run  by  Bear Sterns  as  well  as  Amaranth and LTCM some  time  back  point  to  a  growing  malaise  in  this  sector. I  am  reminded  of  the  history  of  American  banking  and  the  year 1910  when  JP Morgan  stepped  in  to  save  the  banking  system  and  which  finally  gave  birth  to  the  Federal  Reserve  System a  few  years  later. The  1930's  saw  the  birth  of  the  SEC. Now I  think  we  are  going  to  see  the  birth  of  a  hedge  fund  regulator  in  some  form  or  another. This  analysis  takes  a  close  look  at  the  form  that  this  regulation  is  probably  going  to  take.

Corporate Performance, Guidance, Stock Values and the Numbers Game

June 18, 2007

Call for end to Quarterly Guidance | www.ft.com

The  ASPEN  Institute  is  in  the  forefront  of  a  movement  alongwith  AFL-CIO  and  over  a  100  other  companies  to   stop  providing  earnings  guidance. The  argument  is  that  quarterly  earnings  guidance  helps  only  hedge  funds  and  arbitragers  while  harming  the  long  term  performance  goals   of  the  company. This  analysis  takes  a  look   at  this  new  movement  which  has  been  gaining  ground  for  sometime  now  and  is  presently  in  the  midst  of   a  heated  debate  which  is  sure  to  involve  the  SEC  and  other  regulatory  authorities  within  the  coming  12  months.

India and the Outsourcing Phenomenon - The Increasing Costs? - The Coming Decline?

June 13, 2007

Many 'undercurrent' on outsourcing in US | economictimes.indiatimes.com

Outsourcing to India is now a  decade  old  story. The economic  laws  of  comparative  advantage  may  soon  put a  brake  though  not  a  stop to  the  outsourcing  phenomenon. The  first  factor  to  consider  is  that  the  Indian  rupee  has  now  appreciated  to  a  level  of  Rs 40+  to  USD  compared  to  Rs 44+  which  it  was  earlier. This  would  automatically  put  a  brake  to   commoditized  outsourcing. At  the  same  time  India  has  high  quality  human  resources  in  certain  measure  which  will  continue  to  attract  outsourced  jobs. In  this analysis  I  look  at  the   direction  which  outsourcing  is  going  to  take  and  its  effects  on  profitability  of  companies  such  as  Infosys, Wipro, TCS  and  others.

The Effects on Business Profitability - The G8 summit - The Decision to move forward on Global Warming

June 11, 2007

A big step forward on climate change | www.ft.com

This  analysis  examines  the  business  implications  of  the  decision of  the G8  to  start  negotiations  on  a  successor  to  the  Kyoto  protocol  on  climate  change. This  single  decision  with  the  United  States  agreeing  to  join  the  process  and  the  observer  countries  like  India, China  and  Brazil  being  part  of  the  process  will  impact  business  costs  and  the  development  of  nascent  businesses  like  wind   and  solar  power. It  will  also  have  implications  for  industrial  enterprizes, transportation costs (including airlines  and  automobile  industries).

Fair value - Earnings Quality - Audit and Accounting Conundrums

June 11, 2007

PCAOB:Can auditors handle fair value | www.cfo.com

Fair  value  measurements  and  disclosures  have  for  the  last  few  years  been  gaining importance as the  basis of  accounting  statements. This  is  a  far  cry  from  earlier  years  when  historical  costs  were  considered  the  primary  basis  for  accounting  disclosure/measurement. For  an  intervening  period  inflation  accounting  became  a  talked  about  subject  but  never  took  off. This  analysis  looks  at  the  fair  value vs  historical  costs  conundrum  and  how  this  effects  accounting  disclosures.

Global Warming - What are the business implications as America attempts to join the process

June 4, 2007

Bush in U-turn on global warming | www.ft.com

America has  consistently  avoided  ratifying  the  Kyoto protocol and  the  mechanism it puts in place  to  control  the  environment. The  pressure  on  the  federal  government  has however been growing both  internally  and  at  a  global  level. As the G8  summit  is  about  to  commence  the  pressure  is  on  America to make  its  contribution to  global  climate  control. In this  analysis  I  look  at  why it  makes  eminent  business  sense  for  America  to  start  controlling  its  own  pollution  and  how  this  will  pressurize India, China  and  other  countries apart from  its    healthy  effects  on  corporate  profits for  American  companies.

Dow Jones - The Direction ?

June 4, 2007

Bancrofts to discuss Dow Jones offer with News Corp | www.ft.com

The  Dow Jones  takeover  battle  is  getting  hotter  and  so  is  the  battle  for information  control. While  on  the  one  hand  is  Dow  with  a  century  old  record  of  award  winning  reporting  on  the  other  side  is  an  astute  businessman  who  knows  how  to  realize  the  commercial  value  of  news  and  information. In  this  analysis  I  look  at  where  this  takeover  is  heading  and  its  implications.

NASDAQ-OMX - A look at global consolidation of Securities Markets - Where are we heading?

May 29, 2007

Nasdaq agrees to buy Sweden’s OMX for $3.7bn | www.ft.com

As I  see  it  a  great  amount  of  M&A  activity  is  taking  place  in  securities markets. This  consolidation  is  going  to  have  its  effect  beyond  borders  and  will  have  its  effects  on  the  manner  in  which  securities, options  and  derivatives  are  globally  traded. As  yet  this  consolidation  is  taking  place  without  major  regulatory  impediments. In this  analysis  I  take  a  look  at  where  this  M&A  activity  is  heading,  the  nature  of  hindrances  to  be  expected  and  how  securities, options, forex  and  derivative  markets  will  be  impacted  by  this.

CEO pay - The debate spreads - Implications for US companies doing business in India

May 29, 2007

CEO pay not always a function of performance | www.businessstandard.com

The  salaries  of  corporate  chiefs  have  always  been  a  subject  of  reporting, conjecture and debate. Government's in India  have  also  been  for  long  in  a  control  mindset  and  till  a  little  over  a  decade  back  the  salaries  of  corporate India  were  controlled  by  Government. The  entire  scenario  has  since  changed  and  Indian  corporate  salaries  are  just  as  high  comparatively  as  those  in  Europe  or  America. A  recent  speech  by  the  Prime  Minister  has  started  a  debate  on   salaries. Coming  as  it  does  in  the  background  of  the  options  and  salaries  debates and  disclosures  in  the  US  this  is  bound  to  shakeup  the  salary  structure  in  India  and  have  some  echoes  across  the  oceans  in  America. This  analysis  takes a  look  at  some  aspects  of  the  salaries  verses  performance  debate.
