July 1, 2008

Oracle Will Keep Shopping, Just Not in the SaaS Aisle | finance.yahoo.com

According to the media and several prominent individuals, SaaS is the future of the software business.  The “old-fashioned” licensed software model is doomed.  Yet the most profitable and biggest software companies have only a limited presence in SaaS.  Does this mean they are out of step with the future, or do they actually know something?

June 24, 2008

Motorola Impresses With 5-Megapixel Camera Phone | www.informationweek.com

Motorola’s new camera phone won’t be enough to resuscitate their ailing handset business, but it does show that some innovation still lives within Motorola.  This is not the second coming of the RAZR, but is a good beginning if they can follow with other innovative products.

June 19, 2008

HP adding solid-state memory to its servers | www.infoworld.com

The move from rotating disks to Solid State Disks (SSD) is happening faster than most predicted.  Rotating disk vendors such as Seagate will likely see margins erode as they lose the high-end disk business to SSD.

Riverbed vs. Cisco, Sometimes Goliath Wins!

June 5, 2008

Riverbed Shares Are Overvalued Says Goldman, S&P | blogs.barrons.com

Riverbed jumped into the WAN optimization market with innovative technology and an effective business plan.  Their success has justified the market, but they face an uphill battle against the big network vendors.  Ongoing innovation gives them some hope, but their long-term viability is at risk.

Windows 7 Eliminates Need for Vista!

May 30, 2008

Windows 7 to use touch-screen interface; new OS due in late '09, Ballmer says | www.computerworld.com

The release schedule for Windows 7 effectively means most enterprises will go directly from XP to 7.  Windows 7 appears to be Vista done right, with problems addressed and some nice functionality added.  If delivered as promised it should maintain Windows’ position in the market.

Can Sun Microsystems be Profitable?

May 14, 2008

Sun Still Clings to Java Dominance Pitch | seekingalpha.com

Sun has tied its future to open source, but seems clueless on how to monetize open source.  Worse yet, they don’t seem to care!  Meanwhile their core revenue stream continues to dwindle.  Future prospects don’t look good.

Why Not Desktop Virtualization?

May 13, 2008

Desktop Virtualization Drives Security, Not Just Dollar Savings | www.informationweek.com

Desktop virtualization promises huge savings in TCO, improved security, good user experience, improved manageability, etc.  Despite these advantages, it has many issues that have so far prevented widespread adoption, and likely will always limit adoption.

Oracle’s Next Focus - Web 2.0 Apps

May 8, 2008

Interop: Oracle Looks Beyond ERP | www.informationweek.com

Oracle’s applications have both wide and deep functionality, but that’s not enough anymore.  As younger users move into positions of influence intuitive interfaces and social networking features become increasingly important.  The applications vendor that “gets” this will be in a commanding position.

Microsoft Beware, Apple is Knocking!

May 5, 2008

The Mac in the Gray Flannel Suit | www.businessweek.com

Apple cannot win the enterprise market for the Mac, but Microsoft can give it to them.  When the resurgence of the Mac is combined with Microsoft’s continuing insistence on selling Vista to enterprises, the door is open to Apple gaining a solid presence in the enterprise market.

Nokia Versus Apple’s iPhone

April 21, 2008

Nokia Shares Slammed in Wake of Miss | www.smartmoney.com

In terms of volume the iPhone is indeed a “niche product” for Nokia.  However, the impact the iPhone is having on the handset market is much greater than its market share might indicate.  Nokia needs to address their steadily dropping US market share, although the iPhone is only one small piece of that problem.

Google + Salesforce – Should Microsoft Worry?

April 16, 2008

Google, Salesforce.com Integrate Apps | www.redherring.com

The integration of Google Apps into Salesforce.com’s products can only help both companies, so it is certainly not going to help Microsoft.  On the other hand, this level of integration has been available for quite a while between Microsoft’s Outlook and ERP solutions, so it’s not likely to have any dramatic impact on Microsoft.

New Windows in 2009?

April 8, 2008

Will Microsoft deliver Windows 7 next year? | www.infoworld.com

The best course for Microsoft is to release the next OS ahead of schedule and write Vista off as an interim step.  If Microsoft can get a solid Windows 7 released in the middle of 2009 they will retain their hold on the desktop market.  If not, they risk losing a large percentage of that market.

A Tech Slowdown is Not a Tech Collapse!

April 2, 2008

Cisco Signals Trouble Ahead | money.cnn.com

With the overall state of the economy a general slowdown in technology companies is inevitable.  That does not equate to a collapse akin to 2001 or the current Financial Services sector.  Unless something changes only the weak companies will be hurt severely.

March 26, 2008

Microsoft Gets Gartner's Business Intelligence Top Ranking | www.informationweek.com

Microsoft has made surprising progress in the last 2-3 years to get into Gartner’s leaders magic quadrant.  The recent massive consolidation in the BI market gives Microsoft a window of opportunity to win market share at the expense of the well-known vendors.

Seagate and Western Digital Should Worry About Flash!

March 18, 2008

Flash vs. hard drive battle heats up | bigtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com

The only thing preventing flash memory from taking over the notebook market is price.  With prices on flash currently in free-fall, that barrier is likely to be reduced or removed in the next few months.  Seagate and Western Digital’s patents are not likely to protect their market share.

March 11, 2008

The iPhone has such a wide following among consumers, many of whom hold influential positions in enterprises, that some penetration into enterprises will happen quickly.  Once that early stage is past, however, future growth promises to be more difficult.  RIM is a formidable competitor!

Oracle Has Perfected the Art of the Acquisition

March 10, 2008

Oracle sheds light on its acquisition strategy | news.zdnet.co.uk

Growing by acquisition at some level seems like an easy approach to taking over much of the market, yet repeated failures through the years in various businesses have clearly demonstrated it is a road laden with minefields.  Oracle has figured out how to avoid those minefields and appears set to become THE dominating force in enterprise software.

March 7, 2008

Nearly Half Of U.S. Tech Companies Outsource Offshore | www.informationweek.com

Many technology companies depend on cheap offshore labor to control their labor costs.  As the dollar continues to weaken those costs are escalating.  Similarly, offshoring companies depend on selling services in the US, and the weakening dollar makes those services more expensive and will inevitably limit their revenue.
