February 12, 2007
VMware IPO planned, but EMC to keep control | biz.yahoo.com
This move allows direct investment in VMWare, which is probably the fastest growing piece of EMC.
The virtualization market, and VMWare in particular, are set to take advantage of the latest advances in server technology
The next 3-5 years could see almost exponential growth in this market.
Oracle Really Does Support Open Source
February 2, 2007
Oracle does the right thing with open source acquisition | fscavo.blogspot.com
Oracle listens to the market.
The market has clearly endorsed open source, so Oracle is supporting it.
Oracle also has a less cynical motive - there is strong support for open source within Oracle.

IT Struggles to Show BI Value | www.computerworld.com

At the same time companies such as Oracle and SAP are nibbling at this market.

Symantec's Deal to Secure Its Future | www.businessweek.com
Unlike Veritas, there really ARE synergies between Symantec and Altiris!
This deal is a lot smaller than Veritas, and thus easier to integrate.
Altiris is probably in better shape than was Veritas.
Vista: The Consumer Operating System
January 30, 2007
It's Quite Possible That Vista Is Going to Be Just Another Victim of Bad Timing | blogs.eweek.com
Vista, as it is known today, may not have a future in the enterprise.
By the time enterprises are ready to adopt it, something new will be close.
Consumers, on the other hand, will likely immediately start using it, which is probably the right approach, since many of the features seem better suited to the consumers than the enterprise.

Telecommute. Kill a career? | www.networkworld.com
Telecommuting still attracts strong resistance from many executives.
Managers follow in the footsteps of the executives above them.
While technically a great solution, general acceptance requires overcoming major psychological barriers.

Private equity in 2007 | money.cnn.com
Private equity is currently the best, and sometimes only strategy to cash-out investors.
Sarbanes-Oxley is making it much less desirable to be a public company.
There is too much money in PE today chasing too few good prospects.
A Lot Riding on Office Redesign
January 9, 2007
Microsoft's four-letter #&!? Word | money.cnn.com
Microsoft has a lot riding on the success of Office 2007.
Office 2007 is a total redesign from the ground up.
The new user interface "could" have been a huge improvement, instead it's likely a disaster for most users.
It's hard to imagine Microsoft getting much revenue from this with the current state of the user interface.

Crowd Wisdom vs. Google's Genius | www.businessweek.com
Google is king today, but can they maintain that position?
Whatever company or model does finally supplant Google as leader will likely need to incorporate some new approach, since Google has probably maximized the current model.
Wikipedia has grown from nowhere to become a trusted resource, perhaps that model can conquer the search engine world.
Is This The Face of the Next PC?

Novel software drives '$100 laptop' | www.cnn.com
New technology paradigms frequently come from unexpected places, rather than through orderly corporate development.
Seeding a few million laptops with children is an excellent way of changing how the world views computers in a few years.
The current face of computing hasn't changed much for many years. Is it time for a change?
Is the Microsoft/Novell Linux Deal Already Bearing Fruit?
December 21, 2006
Microsoft Hands Out 16,000 SUSE Linux Subscriptions | www.eweek.com
This was a relatively easy win, since SuSE already has a significant presence in Europe.
Nonetheless, any wins by the Microsoft/Novell alliance spell trouble for the Red Hat camp.
The disaffection of many of the free software adherents further divides the Linux world and ultimately works to Microsoft's benefit.
Microsoft Moves Further Into Security
December 12, 2006
Microsoft Ships Forefront Security for Exchange '07 | www.eweek.com
Now the security companies DO need to worry!
This won't kill the bigger antivirus and anti-spam companies, but it will be a major dent in their revenues.
It may kill some of the smaller, more focused security companies.
It's Probably Worse Than Stated!

November 29, 2006
Stallman says Novell/Microsoft deal does not violate GPLv2 | www.cbronline.com
The Microsoft/Novell deal does not violate the current GPLv2 license.
The FSF and Stallman will specifically modify the new GPLv3 license to prohibit such deals.
The FSF is rapidly marginalizing itself and is likely to become increasingly irrelevant as its positions become increasingly extreme.

Strange bedfellows: Microsoft and Novell in Linux deal | fscavo.blogspot.com
Whatever else happens, this is a win for Microsoft
This smacks of desperation on Novell's part, but it's still effective.
One more blow to Red Hat - just what they don't need!
