Talks are Apparently Ongoing at Verizon on Google’s iPhone

February 24, 2009

Will Apple Increase iPhone Value with Rumored Verizon Deal? | seekingalpha.com

1.  There appears to be discussions between Apple and Verizon regarding the iPhone. 2.  However, at this time, it seems far from being a guaranteed project. 3.  Yet, even speculation alone in the news is already a blow to AT&T.

Handwriting was on the Wall on Verizon Looking to Reduce Workforce

February 23, 2009

Verizon settlement may benefit phone company | www.baltimoresun.com

1.  Verizon will sometimes take actions and/or the CWA will make statements that indicate early retirement offers or just plain layoffs are about to occur at the RBOC. 2.  In January, there was a report in the New York Post that foreshadowed such moves. 3.  It would hardly be surprising if Verizon’s practices with copper infrastructure were not just confined to Maryland and to New York.

All of a Sudden Sprint Nextel is Bellwether for Wireless Industry?

February 23, 2009

Sprint Nextel: The Canary in Wireless's Coal Mine? | www.businessweek.com

1.  Yes, “[t]he wireless sector is not immune.” to the economic recession. 2.  However, most of the arguments in the original article are either anecdotal in nature or relate directly to individual firms. 3.  Actually, there do continue to be “challenges specific to [Sprint Nextel].”

Potential Qwest/Cavalier Combination Gets a Little Clearer

February 23, 2009

Cavalier Telephone launches fiber operator | www.fiercetelecom.com

1.  It appears that Cavalier may at least partially morph itself into the new Intellifiber Networks. 2.  It states on Intellifiber’s web site that it was originally founded in 1998 (the same year as Cavalier). 3.  Intellifiber has also adopted a former Cavalier press release as its own that was issued earlier this month.

AT&T and Verizon are Not Like Two Peas in a Pod

February 23, 2009

Goldman's Bold Call Lifts AT&T, Verizon | thestreet.com

1.  It probably is “time to consider the long-range perspective” for the two largest RBOCs. 2.  However, at the moment, Verizon’s “achievable path to growth in 2010” seems much clearer than for AT&T. 3. In a recent article, we wrote about the sense of optimism at Verizon in several sectors on CAPEX for the second half of 2009.

No Surprise that Charter Communications Will File For Chapter 11

February 23, 2009

Charter Communications will file for bankruptcy | www.fiercetelecom.com

1.  The combination of excessive debt, operational inefficiencies, and a network historically maintained poorly – and most importantly, the credit crunch -- were just too much to keep Charter Communications going. 2.  Quality assurance programs were apparently instituted too late in the game to do much good. 3.  Given that Charter is spread out throughout the US, it probably does not make sense for any MSO to acquire the whole company.

Verizon is not Going to Get New FCC Chairman to Like It One Iota

February 23, 2009

Verizon Sucks Up to Genachowski | www.lightreading.com

1.  How does Verizon putting out such a short, specious statement on Julius Genachowski going to be helpful to its cause? 2.  It is so obviously insincere that the RBOC would have been better off saying nothing. 3.  Verizon simply does not believe that he is a “great boost [for]...broadband,” that “he...understands the appropriate role of government,” or that it is “look[ing] forward to working with him.”

Will Qwest Get Help from Cavalier Tel to Penetrate Verizon and AT&T Territories?

February 23, 2009

Qwest to build six fiber rings out of region | telephonyonline.com

1.  It was very curious that former President and CEO of OnFiber Communications, Danny Bottoms, recently took on the head job at the struggling, Cavalier Telephone. 2.  As a CLEC, Cavalier’s lack of ownership of last-mile assets puts the carrier in the category of destined to probably fail. 3.  Qwest bought OnFiber in 2006, and it is possible that the industry is in for a replay.

Probably Too Late, But Nortel Appears to be Shifting Focus to Core Strength

February 23, 2009

Nortel Enhances Carrier Voice and Multimedia Portfolio with More Than 50 New Features | money.cnn.com

1.  It looks like declaring bankruptcy was necessary to knock some sense into Nortel regarding product direction. 2.  Despite the supplier being a marketing machine, for both real products and vaporware, one would be hard-pressed to find many announcements regarding new functionality for the CS 2000 over the last several years. 3.  Development of complex feature sets is a key success factor in the market for Class 5/local softswitches.

“Not All 4G Networks are Created Equal,” But Clearwire’s Appears Inferior

February 20, 2009

Clearwire Gets Snippy Over Verizon’s LTE Announcement | www.xchangemag.com

1.  No doubt Clearwire had its “official statement” done well before the announcement by Verizon Wireless. 2.  It does seem to be true that Clearwire has an advantage in “spectrum holdings” and potentially with “better speeds and bandwidth than what is being described as next year’s LTE networks.” 3. The problem that the WiMAX carrier consistently ignores is the much smaller amount of footprint coverage compared with Verizon.

Growing Appreciation of Neutral Tandem as “Sleeper”

February 20, 2009

Neutral Tandem: Uniquely Positioned in Telecom | seekingalpha.com

1.  It is not hard to see why a “retired engineer” would appreciate a company like Neutral Tandem. 2.  However, the “bickering among the major carriers” for tandem services appears overstated in the article. 3.  In fact, Neutral almost seems to go out of its way not to knock the traditional tandem businesses of the RBOCs.

Verizon Wireless’ Aggressiveness with LTE is Critical to Starent’s Future

February 20, 2009

MWC 2009: Starent Dines on LTE | www.unstrung.com

1." That Starent has been chosen for Verizon's LTE packet core isn't a major surprise” – is, of course, a true statement. 2.  The real positive development for the supplier is the rapid speed in which the wireless provider is planning to deploy the 4G technology. 3. One suspects that during Starent’s future earnings calls there will be less emphasis on WiMAX, while trying to avoid talking about Clearwire at all.

Infinera’s Move to the Rural Space is Almost Unbelievable

February 19, 2009

Infinera Gets RUS | www.lightreading.com

1.  After struggling to get into Tier 1 carriers, it is simply mindboggling that Infinera wants people to take it seriously about going after the RLECs. 2.  The supplier has a product that has had trouble in terms of cost of going into the metro portions of networks. 3.  Now the story is that it is going after a market that tends to be very access-centric.

AT&T Can Afford to be Patient on LTE

February 18, 2009

AT&T Plots LTE in 2011 | www.unstrung.com

1.  These latest wireless announcements by AT&T seem to be related more to PR than to actual network development. 2.  It felt forced by Verizon Wireless to declare a “deployment date [that] brings AT&T more in line with its key rival.” 3.  It is more important that AT&T gets its video landline business in better shape as soon as possible – in order to develop synergies with 4G.

Effective Rhetoric on Net Neutrality for Service Providers

February 18, 2009

Frontier says tiering Internet prices makes sense | www.cnbc.com

1.  In at least indirectly demonstrating inconsistency in the principles of government bureaucrats, it could make it easier for carriers to win the fight against net neutrality. 2.  The CEO of Frontier Communications is using their preoccupation with “fairness” to her advantage. 3.  All service providers should implement tiered services as soon as possible.

Tellabs Was not Exactly “Bracing” for a FTTP Decline

February 18, 2009

Tellabs braces for FTTP sales drop-off | telephonyonline.com

1.  Before Rob Pullen became CEO, he apparently knew he was going to exit the optical access business. 2.  This drop-off in PON sales was calculated in his future plans right from day one of his tenure. 3.  So, using the word, “bracing” is a little too dramatic.

Start of Residential Local Voice Resembling Long Distance on Price?

February 18, 2009

Verizon May Offer Landline Plan for $5 | online.wsj.com

1. Obviously, Verizon is putting out a trial balloon to determine the level of reception for its idea. 2. The key to the plan is that “[o]nly customers with high-speed Web access from Verizon would qualify.” 3. So, it appears to be more about retaining the more attractive Internet customers.

Is Alcatel-Lucent Headed for Oblivion?

February 17, 2009

Expansion of Alcatel-Lucent Portfolio Speeds Transition to Carrier Ethernet in the Enterprise, Giving Service Providers New Revenue Opportunities | finance.yahoo.com

1.  Alcatel-Lucent appears to be following Nortel’s path. 2.  The French supplier needs to get its act together real quickly. 3.  Otherwise, it is likely to be out of business.

Ciena’s Adapted CN 4200 Will Strengthen its Competitive Position

February 17, 2009

Ciena expands metro optical reach for regional networks | telephonyonline.com

The RBOCs clearly wanted more of a regional solution out of Ciena’s CN 4200 box. 2.  In particular, they wanted the device to potentially work directly with the supplier’s CoreDirector. 3. The MSOs will probably like the extended reach of the 4200 as well.

Intel’s Defense of WiMAX Involves Host of Contradictions

February 17, 2009

Intel Says Clearwire Corp. Doesn't Need More Capital | online.wsj.com

1.  The Intel executive was unsuccessful in striving to change the subject about WiMAX and the US. 2.  A number of his points do not follow in a logical manner. 3.  One may easily expect that Intel wants to move the discussion away from the States because of its lack of confidence in Clearwire’s viability.
